Apple has just introduced a brand new laptop that is getting a lot of attention… Meet the MacBook Neo, Apple’s most affordable MacBook ever! Starting at $1,149NZD or $979NZD with education savings, Apple have finally created a competitor for mid-range Windows laptops!

For years, MacBooks have been known as premium devices with premium price tags. The Neo changes that by offering the familiar Apple design, macOS experience and strong battery life at a much more accessible price. In this MacBook Neo buying guide, we will look at what the laptop offers, how it compares to other computers in the same price range, and whether it might be the right laptop for you!

Performance That Handles Everyday Tasks Easily

A18 Chip Photo

The MacBook Neo runs on Apple’s A18 Pro chip, which includes a 6-core CPU, a 5-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine for AI and modern computing tasks.

For everyday activities such as browsing the web, working on documents, streaming content, or editing photos, this chip delivers fast performance! Everything feels smooth and responsive. Apple even claims the Neo can be up to 50% faster for common tasks than some popular Intel Ultra 5 chipset laptops!

When you compare that to many laptops in the same price range, the MacBook Neo starts to look like a very good deal. Many budget laptops focus on cutting costs with slower storage or lower-powered processors. Apple has instead focused on efficiency and smooth everyday performance!

A Display and Design That Feel Premium

MacBook Neo Display

Another area where the MacBook Neo stands out is its display and build quality. The laptop features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2408 x 1506 resolution and up to 500 nits of brightness. Which is brighter and sharper than many laptops in the same price category! The laptop also uses an aluminium body and weighs 1.23kg, which makes it lightweight and durable at the same time!

If you compare this to many budget/mid-range Windows laptops that often use plastic builds or lower resolution screens, the MacBook Neo immediately feels like a more premium device. For students or everyday users who want something reliable and well-built, this is one of the biggest advantages highlighted in this MacBook Neo buying guide!

Battery Life That Lasts All Day

Macbook Neo Battery Banner

Battery Life is another area where Apple laptops tend to perform well. The MacBook Neo can deliver up to 16 hours of battery life, which means most people can get through a full workday or school day without needing to charge!

Many laptops in the same price range struggle to reach that level of efficiency because they rely on less efficient processors. Apple’s hardware and software integration allows macOS to run very efficiently on the A18 Pro chip, which helps extend the laptop’s battery life!

If you want a laptop that can last all day, the MacBook Neo has you covered. It’s one of the key highlights in this MacBook Neo buying guide!

How It Compares to Other Laptops in the Same Price Range

Neo VS Others Banner

If you are shopping for a laptop around this price point, you will likely see options from brands like HP, Lenovo, and Acer with Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen processors. These can be solid laptops, but they often compromise on things such as display quality, battery life, or build materials. However, if you prefer the Windows operating system, we have a range of recommended ASUS computers that we are currently offering a FREE SETUP for until April 10th! Check them out!

The MacBook Neo takes a slightly different approach. Instead of offering the highest raw performance, Apple focuses on balance. You get a bright display, excellent battery life, smooth macOS performance, and a premium aluminium design all in one device!

Compared with high-end Apple laptops like the MacBook Pro, the Neo does have fewer features and less raw power. However, for everyday tasks, it still delivers a very capable experience. The MacBook Neo is such a well-balanced laptop!

Final Thoughts

The MacBook Neo is an interesting addition to Apple’s laptop lineup. It brings the Mac experience to a lower price point while still keeping the design, battery life, and smooth performance that MacBooks are known for.

For students, home users, or anyone upgrading from an older laptop, it would be a very solid choice. If you are looking for a reliable everyday laptop that feels premium without the typical MacBook price tag, the Neo is definitely worth considering! Many notable tech reviewers, such as Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) and Dave Lee (Dave2D), have sung high praises for the Neo, with some reviewers already dubbing it “Laptop of the Year”!

Hopefully, this MacBook Neo buying guide has helped steer you in the right direction as you search for a new laptop. If you are unsure whether it is the right device for you, the team at Geeks on Wheels are always here to help you choose the right computer and get everything set up properly! Happy shopping!

Is it Better to Repair or Replace a Computer https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/computing/is-it-better-to-repair-or-replace-a-computer/ Sun, 23 Nov 2025 21:16:49 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=19325
Repair or replace a computer?

Are you trying to decide if it’s better to repair a computer or replace it? We’ve put together a few key points to help you make the right choice. There are several factors that can determine whether it’s better to repair a computer or replace it. These include software compatibility, physical components and the age of your device. Repairs can range from simple jobs like replacing a laptop battery to more complex challenges like motherboard problems. Everyone’s tech is at a different stage in its life cycle. We hope this blog from Geeks on Wheels helps you make the best decision.

Key considerations: repairing or replacing a computer

Windows 11 desktop home page

Can my device run the latest operating systems?

One of the biggest factors in deciding whether to repair or replace a computer is whether it can run the latest operating systems. It’s important to stay up to date for a number of reasons. As Windows and macOS continue to release new versions, older hardware can struggle to meet the minimum requirements. If your device can’t install the newest system updates, you may start missing out on new features. You could also lose security improvements and compatibility with modern software. This limits what you are able to do with your computer, even if the hardware is still functional.

No one wants a computer that won’t load their favourite apps and doesn’t protect them from scams, right?

Windows 11 exemplifies this; it introduced much tighter hardware requirements. Many perfectly working devices from as recent as 2016 or 2017 can’t upgrade to Windows 11. If you’re deciding whether to repair or upgrade a computer, this is a big factor in your decision-making. Spending money to repair a machine that can no longer run modern software wouldn’t be a good investment. This is especially true in the long term.

Do you know what operating system version your device is running? This is an important question to ask yourself. It can help you decide whether it’s better to repair a computer or replace it.

Windows 10 end of support is particularly unique. If you aren’t aware, this happened in October of 2025 and had some pretty substantial hardware requirements. If you’re still running Windows 10, check if your device can upgrade to Windows 11. We have a handy guide outlining all the steps. The team at Geeks on Wheels can talk you through the process if needed.

For macOS, if your MacBook is older than a 2020 model, it’s likely unable to run the latest macOS software. Older devices may not support Tahoe. This carries the same implications as not being able to upgrade to Windows 11. You may miss out on new features, security improvements, and compatibility with modern software. So if your MacBook is older than a 2020 model, it might be more worthwhile to replace it. Repairing it may not be the best investment.

Does hardware age make a difference?

Old computer

The age of your computer and its components is a major factor in determining whether it’s worth repairing. Even well-maintained devices have a practical lifespan, and as components age, they can become slower and less dependable. While a repair might restore your computer, older hardware has limits. It could be nearing what it can realistically handle.

As computers age, internal components naturally wear out. This means hard drives can start developing bad sectors, and cooling systems may become less effective. Older CPUs and RAM might also struggle with modern software demands. You might be able to replace one part, but that doesn’t change the age of the rest of the system.

Performance is another key consideration. Even if an older computer can technically run modern software, it may do so much more slowly. Browsers, apps, and operating systems are designed with newer hardware in mind. Tasks like video meetings, large spreadsheets, online learning platforms, and even everyday browsing can begin to feel sluggish.

If your computer is causing frustration or slowing down productivity, it could be a number of factors. Overheating devices that simply need a thorough clean or computers infected with malware, both perform at sub-optimal levels. This could be the case for yours, if so, Geeks on Wheels can help.

At the end of the day, there is no universal age at which a computer must be replaced; rather, the decision should be based on a combination of its age, performance, maintenance costs and whether it still meets your needs. However, HP states that the typical lifespan of a laptop is 3 to 5 years, while a desktop ranges from 3 to 8 years.

Desktops vs Laptops vs NUCs: Which Makes the Most Sense to Repair or Replace?

Should you repair or replace desktops, laptops or NUCs

When you’re weighing up whether to repair or replace a device, the type of computer you own plays a major role. Desktops, laptops and NUCs each have different lifespans, upgrade potential and cost-to-benefit considerations, so the right decision can vary widely depending on what you’re using.

Desktop Computers/PCs

Desktops are often the most cost-effective out of the bunch to repair, generally offering the best long-term value. Their components are modular, widely available, and often easy to replace. This means that a failing power supply, sluggish hard drive or ageing graphics card can usually be swapped out at a relatively low cost without replacing the entire machine.

As technology advances, desktops also deliver more flexibility for upgrades. Parts of the computer can be swapped out for better alternatives, slowly improving performance and extending its usable life. Because of this, desktops are often the better choice to repair in comparison to laptops or NUCs, which have less repair flexibility.

Laptops

Laptops are more compact and convenient, but that design comes with trade-offs. Many manufacturers solder components in place, limiting upgrade options and making repairs more labour-intensive. Common fixes like replacing a battery, keyboard or screen can be worthwhile, especially on higher-end models.

However, once a laptop begins showing multiple issues, slow performance, poor battery life, and support for newer operating systems, repair costs can quickly approach the price of a good replacement. In general, laptops may make financial sense to repair up to around 4 to 6 years old, sometimes even longer. This depends on model, condition and value, but beyond that, replacement often becomes more cost-effective.

NUCs/Mini PCs & All-in-One (AIO)

NUCs and other compact desktop replacements are great for saving space and power, but their small size limits their ability to be upgraded/repaired. Some models allow for small upgrades, but many important components can’t be changed

Because of this, the decision to repair usually depends on the cost and nature of the fault. In many instances, replacing the unit is the better investment. NUCs typically have a lifespan similar to laptops, 3 to 5 years of strong usability, depending on the usage and model, before limitations start to outweigh the benefits of repair.

All-in-one computers combine the screen and internal components into one unit, saving space, but similar to NUCs, they limit upgrade and repair options. While some models allow RAM or storage replacements, many major components are difficult or uneconomical to fix. As a result, if an AIO develops serious issues or shows its age, replacing it is often more cost-effective than repairing it.

Prices

As mentioned above, due to desktops being more flexible with interchangeable parts, it often makes sense to repair them. However, the consensus for laptops and NUCs is that if the repair costs 50% of the price of a new, comparable computer, it’s likely more cost-effective to replace the device.

So when deciding whether to repair or replace your computer, it comes down to value, practicality, and how well your device can keep up with today’s software and performance needs. Older hardware, unsupported operating systems, and rising repair costs can all make replacement the smarter long-term investment. On the other hand, devices that still have strong performance, upgrade potential, or affordable repair options, especially desktops, can often be repaired cost-effectively.

At the end of the day, the best choice is the one that keeps your tech reliable, secure, and able to handle the tasks you need. If you’re unsure, getting a professional assessment from Geeks on Wheels can help you decide where your money is best spent and whether your device still has life left in it.

What are the functions of an operating system?

When purchasing a new laptop, you’ll first want to consider what operating system you want. You may already have a preference.

For example, if you already own an iPhone and Apple Watch, it makes sense to stick with the Apple ecosystem. In that case, macOS is likely your best fit.

Apple macOS is known for its sleek and stylish design and Apple ecosystem integration. However, macOS laptop’s are also priced on the higher side and the newer models lack ports. So it’s worth weighing the pros and cons before making an executive decision.

If you’re hunting for the best cheap laptop for your child’s first laptop for school, a budget-friendly Chromebook running Google’s Chrome OS could be a smart idea. Chromebooks are cheap but reliable, sturdy and often schools use Google Workspace in the classroom.

If you’re considering a Microsoft Windows laptop, you can be sure you’ll get excellent software compatibility, a wide range of laptop choices, and great specs for the price. It’s also worth noting that Windows 10’s end of life is just around the corner, so you’ll need to make sure the laptop you choose is up-to-date and running Windows 11.

What is the best CPU for gaming?

Essentially, the CPU (central processing unit) is the brain of your computer. It helps your laptop perform tasks. What type of CPU you have will determine how well those tasks are performed.

The CPU you choose will depend on your specific needs, so it’s worth taking the time to figure out exactly what those are. That’s where this laptop buying guide comes in handy!

If you’re a casual laptop user, who has basic needs and you’re scoping the internet for the best cheap laptop to suit said needs, then you’ll be okay with a simple Intel Core i3. However, please keep in mind that this doesn’t always land as a cheap option.

On the other hand, if you want a good middle-ground laptop with decent laptop specs and reliable performance across a range of tasks, go for an Intel Core i5.

If you’re studying graphic design, searching for the best laptops for students or you’re an avid gamer hunting for the best gaming laptops, then you’ll want a CPU good for these demanding needs. A Intel Core i7 or Intel Core i9 CPU would be a great choice for gamers, video editors, graphic designers and even engineers.

What is the importance of RAM in a computer?

A laptop’s RAM (random access memory) is responsible for storing the data your CPU needs to carry out tasks, such as surfing the web or playing games. So, the more capacity your RAM has the better it can handle multiple tasks and run smoothly.

If you’re looking for the best cheap laptop for yourself or someone else, we’d recommend a minimum of 8GB of RAM. This is plenty if you’ll mainly be browsing the web, checking emails, and doing basic word processing (like working with Word documents).

If you tend to multitask, use productivity apps (such as spreadsheets), or plan on working with photo editing software, 16GB of RAM will serve you best.

For those planning to run demanding games or do heavy video editing, a higher RAM capacity, typically between 32GB and 64GB, will give you the performance you need.

Which SSD to buy for a laptop?

Your SSD (solid state drive) stores all your files, applications, operating system and everything else that you save and install on your laptop.

Older laptops use HDDs (Hard disk drives). However, SSDs have become the new norm in modern laptops. This is because they have much faster reading and writing speeds which makes booting, file transferring and response times a lot speedier!

All summed up, your SSD’s capacity determines how much your laptop can hold.

256GB, in our view, is the true bare minimum for SSD storage in today’s laptops. Some places might still recommend 128GB for budget laptops, however the reality is that 128GB basically only covers your operating system and essential programs. If you want any kind of personal storage, you’ll quickly find there’s no space left. It can work if you rely heavily on the cloud and stick to very light use, but it’s not practical for most people.

That being said, as an expert tech company, we recommend 512GB of SSD storage as the middle ground for most users. It’s an ideal choice for everyday home use and a strong contender if you’re looking for a fairly priced option among the best laptops for students. While it may cost more than 256GB, it offers a much better balance of storage, speed, and long-term value.

If you’re a media-heavy user, creative professional, or gamer, then 1TB or more of SSD storage is the smart move. This gives you faster performance, loads of space for large files, and extra breathing room for the future — making it a top pick if you’re after the best laptop for demanding needs.

What is the average battery life of a laptop?

Battery life is fairly straightforward to understand and easy to gauge based on how much you think you’ll need.

Your laptop’s battery life determines how long it can run on a full charge without being plugged in.

If you’re buying a big bulky laptop that will likely never move too far from a nearby outlet, then battery life shouldn’t be such a big concern for you. In that case, 6 hours of battery life will be acceptable. But we must also highlight that this is the bare minimum you should be looking for.

Our biggest recommendation would be to go for a laptop with at least 9 hours of battery life and even more if you see fit! With this long-lasting spec, you can be sure your new laptop won’t let you down when working and studying on the go.

It’s also a good idea to consider other battery features. For example, fast charging and USB-C power delivery can save you from being tied to a wall socket for too long!

What is the best graphics card for a laptop?

The GPU (graphics processing unit), or graphics card, is responsible for producing the visuals you see on your screen, from images and videos to games and animations. It processes and renders these visuals quickly and smoothly, ensuring a seamless viewing experience.

There are two types of GPUs: integrated and dedicated. This laptop buying guide should help you pick between the two.

An integrated GPU is built into the same chip as the computer’s CPU (central processing unit), meaning it shares the computer’s main memory to perform its tasks.

A dedicated GPU, on the other hand, is a separate card or chip with its own processor and memory, so it doesn’t need to rely on the CPU like an integrated GPU does.

If you know you’ll only be completing simple tasks on your laptop, such as streaming and basic gaming use, then an integrated GPU will do you just fine. A couple of examples include an Intel Xe or AMD Radeon Vega GPU.

If you’re an avid gamer, creative, engineer or developer working with demanding applications, you should be looking at a dedicated GPU. Try the NVIDIA RTX models or the AMD Radeon RX GPU.

What display resolution do I need for my laptop?

A laptop’s display resolution refers to how many pixels are shown on the screen at any given time. The more pixels your display has, the crisper your image will be. Therefore, if you want to improve your user experience with added detail and clarity, you’ll want to opt for a laptop with a greater display resolution, and therefore a higher number of pixels.

First up, we have FHD, also known as Full HD. Sometimes, even referred to as 1080p. FHD is a completely fine choice for users who use their device predominantly for simple tasks, such as web browsing or word processing. In fact, in these cases paying the extra money for a higher display resolution would be unnecessary.

Next up is QHD, or Quad HD, often referred to as 2K. It offers a noticeable step up from FHD with sharper, more detailed visuals. If you stream a lot of video content, the crisper picture could be worth the extra cost. For casual gamers or designers, QHD is more than capable of meeting your needs.

If you’re looking for the best gaming laptops, specifically for top-level gaming, a laptop with a display resolution of UHD, or Ultra HD, often referred to as 4K, could be the go. It’s also great if you’re a professional editor, for finer control of small details and professional results. However, 4K laptop’s aren’t as portable as their counterparts as this particular display resolution will consume a lot of your battery.

What refresh rate should my laptop have?

The refresh rate of your display is the number of times per second that the image refreshes on your laptop’s screen. The higher the refresh rate (measured in Hertz), the smoother and more fluid the visuals will appear, resulting in less motion blur, especially during fast-moving scenes!

60Hz (60 Hertz) is standard for most laptops. If you’re using your laptop for general tasks, this refresh rate will suit you well. It can also be fine for less intense tasks, such as non-competitive or slower-paced games. It’s also the more budget-friendly option, so if smooth visuals or reduced motion blur aren’t a priority, 60Hz works just fine.

For a step up, 75Hz to 120Hz is ideal. This is perfect if you want smoother visuals for faster-paced gaming or if you work with editing moving media or 3D animations. You’ll notice a clear improvement in smoothness compared to 60Hz.

Finally, if you’re in competitive or professional gaming or work with fast-moving visuals as a graphic designer or video editor, anything above 144Hz should be your go-to. The extra fluidity and responsiveness help improve accuracy and reduce eye strain.

When choosing a refresh rate, it’s important to consider how many frames per second (fps) your graphics card can actually output. For example, a 144Hz display won’t give its full benefit if your graphics card can only produce 60fps.

And that’s a wrap! We hope our laptop buying guide has been useful. If you’d like a hand picking the perfect laptop, whether for yourself or as a gift, or need help setting it up and getting comfortable with the basics, give the Geeks a call today. With our tech expertise, you can trust we’ll point you in the right direction.

Risks Of Not Upgrading to Windows 11 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/security-safety/risks-of-not-upgrading-to-windows-11/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 01:36:59 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=18750

You’ve likely seen that Windows 10 is ending support on October 14th, 2025. Whether it’s pop-ups on your Windows 10 devices, emails from Geeks on Wheels or articles in the news. Everyone has been talking about it. Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10 for all users. We have mentioned that those who don’t update will be at risk, but what does this mean? Reminder, this doesn’t apply to those using Apple Mac devices.

The risks of not upgrading to Windows 11 are numerous and varied, depending on how you use your devices. For most users, security is the first and major concern. In time, functionality may also be affected, and for businesses, compliance factors may be an issue. Read on to learn more about the risks of not upgrading.

Want to check if you can upgrade?

Do you have a Windows device and you’re not sure what version it is? Or perhaps you want to try upgrading your current computer before splurging on a new device? Check out our how-to guide for checking your OS and updating.

Increased Security Risks

The major concern for most users and us here at Geeks on Wheels is the end of security fixes for Windows 10. Without security updates your device and systems are vulnerable to a range of cyber threats, including viruses, malware, and hacking attempts. Attackers will exploit new security vulnerabilities to gain access to devices. They may then go on to access or steal data, disrupt operations or manipulate your device. Security updates would usually aim to patch these vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.

This all sounds very doom and gloom but it is the unfortunate reality of a device that is not properly protected. The consequences of such attacks can include financial losses, data breaches and potentially reputational damage. Nobody wants to put themselves at risk unnecessarily, so check if you can upgrade today.

Reduced Software Compatibility

The next major issue will be the lack of updates. Software is always evolving, with new features, requirements and capabilities rolling out constantly. With the recent advancements in AI we can expect that to continue at a rapid pace.

By continuing to use an outdated software version (Windows 10 or earlier), you will be missing out on new features. Windows 11 has numerous new features, including optimised performance, improved security features, Auto HDR, and updated memory management. Not updating doesn’t just mean you will miss out on the improved capabilities of Windows 11. Over time, the popular software and applications you use will also release updates. These will likely not be compatible with older operating system versions.

For example, the latest version of Google Chrome available for Windows 8.1 users is Chrome 109, which was released in January 2023. For up to date users the latest version available is 137.0.7151.68/69. That means users with outdated software will be missing out on nearly 3 years’ worth of security updates, improvements and new features. You might also notice some of your favourite websites or widgets require an up-to-date browser to use or access them.

These flow-on effects of an outdated operating system are numerous, compounding and inconvenient. They also put your device at constant risk. Not only will your device not have security updates from Windows, it will eventually no longer have security updates from new software versions of your favourite programs.

Increased Operational Downtime

Older devices are less efficient. Just like us, computers slow down as they get older. Especially when they can’t be updated anymore. Running older versions of Windows means your devices will not have access to the latest features and updates, which could save you time and increase productivity. This is also true for the software and applications that will fall behind.

Similarly, cyberattacks and security vulnerabilities cost individuals and businesses both time and money. They can often result in lost business and operational disruptions.

Regulatory Compliance

While this one only affects businesses and organisations, it is a great point to note.
By utilising outdated software, even given the numerous risks, you might not be meeting regulatory requirements. Depending on your industry or how you handle data, the risks may vary. Up-to-date and supported operating systems are standard across most industries and ensure the security of your devices, data and systems.

Remember, you don’t necessarily have to purchase a new device to update to Windows 11. If your device is less than 5 years old you might be able to update, provided it meets the minimum hardware requirements.  Whether you’re updating your existing device or looking for a brand new one with Windows 11 pre-installed, Geeks on Wheels are your experts for all things Windows 11. Give the team a call today and they can recommend the perfect device for your needs.

TV Buying Guide NZ https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/buying-guide/tv-buying-guide-nz/ Wed, 18 Dec 2024 20:45:58 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=18152 Are you looking to upgrade to a new TV or find one that meets your specific needs? In this blog, we’ll provide a straightforward TV buying guide, highlighting the key specs to consider when asking yourself, ‘What TV should I buy?’ So, follow along!

Choosing The Best Refresh Rates

Let’s kick off our TV buying guide by talking about refresh rates and what’s best for you. A refresh rate, put simply, is how many times the image updates within a second on your screen. The higher the refresh rate, the smoother your image will be, like watching a ball move clearly across the screen rather than skip around. A TV’s refresh rate is measured in Hertz (Hz). The more common refresh rates found in TVs include 60Hz and 120Hz. Most standard TVs will have a 60Hz, however, if you want to see an improvement in motion and a reduce in blur, you might want to go for a TV with 120Hz. In fact, the best TVs for watching sports, or for gaming should ideally have a 120Hz or even more!

Understanding High Dynamic Range

High dynamic range, or HDR, makes the picture on your TV look more realistic and vibrant by showing more detail in both bright and dark scenes.

The basic HDR standard is HDR10, which is common and works with most TVs. It uses the same HDR settings for the entire video.

For a better experience, consider HDR10+, which adjusts the HDR settings for each scene, giving you an even better picture. The best HDR option is Dolby Vision. It’s the most advanced, using scene-by-scene adjustments like HDR10+ but with extra features for the highest quality picture.

TV Buying Based on Size

This one’s pretty important in this TV buying guide. Before you purchase a new TV, you should consider the space in which it will go. For example, if you have a smaller space or seating area, you probably wouldn’t want to go for a 75 inch TV! Samsung suggests that “the best and most immersive viewing experience is when 40 degrees of your field of view is taken up by the screen.” You can easily calculate the ideal viewing distance based on the size of your TV. Simply multiply the screen size by 1.2 to determine how many inches your couch should be from your TV. For example, if you’re looking to buy a 75-inch TV, your seating should be at least about 90 inches, or 2.3 meters, away. Easy as that!

The Ideal Screen Resolution

A resolution is how many pixels are present in a display or entire screen. Put simply, the more pixels a TV has, the crisper the image will be!

However, more pixels aren’t always better, and sometimes it’s not worth the extra cost. For smaller TVs, having the highest number of pixels doesn’t offer much benefit because the pixels are so compact that you won’t notice a significant difference. However, for larger TVs, more pixels can make a noticeable difference in picture quality. When browsing for TVs based on their resolution please note that if a TV’s resolution reads Full HD, this is just another term for 1080p!

Best TVs For Gaming

If you plan on doing a lot of gaming on your TV, you’ll want to consider several factors that don’t come into play with regular content watching. So, to get the best gaming experience, here’s what to look out for!

First up, you’ll want to aim for a TV with a refresh rate of at least 120 Hz, and up to 240 Hz. The best choice depends on the type of games you play. A 240 Hz would be ideal for fast-paced games, providing a smoother and more responsive experience.

Secondly, ensure that your TV has an input lag under 15 milliseconds. While most TVs offer an input lag of around 15 milliseconds, aiming for a lower input lag will provide more responsive gameplay. This is especially important for competitive and professional gamers who need every millisecond advantage.

Thirdly, check that your new TV has an HDMI 2.1 port for a high bandwidth connection that supports advanced gaming features. Some of the advanced gaming features you might want to opt for include, Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto-Low Latency Mode (ALLM) for an optimised gaming experience.

Content Preferences and Smart TVs

Finally, our last bit of advice for our TV buying guide is that you should consider what content you watch the most frequently. These days, there’s not really any non-smart TV options, however depending on how much you spend, Smart TVs will offer different ranges of apps and services.

So, if you find you don’t use streaming apps all that much, and you don’t think you will find value in a higher end Smart TV with a larger range of apps and services, then consider going for a cheaper entry Smart TV instead.

Are you interested in using social media on your Smart TV? Do you want to download games or use voice command capabilities? How about sending content from your phone to your TV? These are all important considerations to think about before purchasing your new TV. Knowing exactly what features you need will help you find the perfect TV that meets all your needs.

Now that you know what to look for when buying a TV, make a list of the features you need based on our TV buying guide to ensure you get the perfect option for you! If you need help setting up your new Smart TV, choosing the right one, or even mounting it on the wall, book a Geek today! We’re always here to help!

Top iPhone 16 features https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/buying-guide/top-iphone-16-features/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 03:57:54 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=17812 On September 9th, Apple unveiled the highly anticipated iPhone 16. This was alongside the new AirPods 4 and Apple Watch 10! In this blog, we’re diving into the standout iPhone 16 Features. Across its basic, plus, and pro models. So, if you’re in the market for a new smartphone and considering the iPhone 16, you’ll have all the information you need right here. Without the hassle of scouring the web!

Price and Availability

To begin with, let’s look into how much the iPhone 16 models are worth! First up, the basic iPhone 16 will cost you from $1599 NZD, whereas the iPhone 16 Plus, with a larger display will cost you from $1,799 NZD. But, if you really want the best in the game, you’ll have to splash out on the iPhone 16 Pro. This is priced from $1,999 NZD. Or if you want something even better, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will be priced from $2,399 NZD.

But when is it all available to actually purchase? Well if you’re wanting to pre-order your iPhone 16, you’ll be able to do this at exactly 12:00am NZST on September 14th. After that, general purchasing will be available from September 20th.

Source: Apple

Colours and Display

Now let’s get into the design of the iPhone 16 models. Well first up, both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus come with the following colour options. White, black, teal, “ultramarine” and pink! Whereas the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max has its own collection of colours. These include white titanium, darker titanium, natural titanium and a brown coloured desert titanium.

Size wise, the basic iPhone 16 will have a 6.1-inch display. The plus will offer a little more surface area with a 6.7-inch display. On the other hand, the pro models will offer both a 6.3-inch display as well as a whopping 6.9-inch display for its max version – the largest iPhone display ever! Apple also stated that the devices included the thinnest borders yet!

Lifespan

When we invest a significant amount in a phone, we understandably expect it to last. Apple claims to have introduced features that will make all of the iPhone 16 models the most durable and long-lasting iPhones yet.

iPhone 16 will offer a sturdy, aerospace-grade aluminium enclosure with glass that is two times tougher than any other smartphone glass! Plus, with a new internal design, the iPhone 16 will dissipate heat more effectively. This will prevent over-heating causing damage to your devices battery.

And, speaking of your smartphone’s battery, across all of the models on one end you’ll get up to 22 hours video playback for the basic iPhone 16. On the other you’ll get a massive 33 hours video playback for the iPhone 16 Pro Max!

Camera control

Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s dive into one of the most exciting iPhone 16 features: Camera Control! With a new button added to the side of your iPhone, you’ll be able to quickly, easily and efficiently access and manage your camera controls!

You’ll just have to click the button once to open the camera app, lightly press the button to access controls like zoom, then click it once more to take a photo! So with this ultimate iPhone 16 feature, the need to tap menus and modes on your screen will be completely eliminated! How cool is that?

Also, cool side feature. If you click the Camera Control button and point your camera towards… let’s say a nearby restaurant, your iPhone 16 will pull up information such as reviews, the menu and how to make a reservation! Awesome!

Camera quality

Speaking of the camera related iPhone 16 features, we’ll also be seeing an improvement in the camera and video quality of this new range! With a two-in-one 48MP Fusion camera you’ll take super high resolution photos and with 2x optical-quality and the Ultra Wide camera, you’ll be able to shoot extreme close-up photos, or wider more expansive photos! As stated by Apple, it is “like having four lenses in your pocket!”.

Oh, and if you’re going to purchase the iPhone 16 Pro, expect the smartphone to capture 4K 120 frames per second videos. It will also record spatial audio with reduced background noise!

Siri enhancement

The iPhone 16 range is built with AI in mind. So, you can assume that the role Apple’s digital assistant, Siri, plays has greatly improved! In fact, Siri can now pull from your messages. This means it can remind you about dates and times planned through text messages. Plus, you can also say “Hey Siri, please send ‘Mum’ the photos I took in Wellington yesterday” and Siri will understand how to do just that!

Source: Apple

Custom-built chip for Apple Intelligence

Finally, let’s talk about the iPhone 16’s new A18 chip! It’s two generations ahead of the iPhone 15’s A16 Bionic chip. Plus it’s custom built for Apple Intelligence, Apple’s personal intelligence system, which we should be seeing in December of this year!

Summed up by Apple, the new Apple Intelligence system will help you “write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly.” For example, it will provide writing tools for proofreading, summarising and re-writing and it will help you prioritise messages in the Mail app. You’ll also get some very advanced privacy protections. Letting you feel confident that your data is always in the right hands, aka your own, not even Apples!

So there you have it, some of our favourite iPhone 16 features! And there’s lots more where that came from! General availability kicks off on September 20th.  So, make sure you mark that down in your calendar! Oh, and remember, if you need help setting up a new device or need some smartphone or tablet training, Book a Geek to get you started!

Windows 10 End of Support – EOL https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/computing/windows-10-end-of-life/ Wed, 17 Jul 2024 05:19:27 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=17504 Windows 10 will be ending support on October 14th, 2025! This end of support is particularly unique. This is because it will be the first time an operating system has a hardware requirement. So, if you have older devices running Windows 10, after mid-October next year, Microsoft will no longer provide free security updates or technical support for those devices. But don’t panic! We’ll walk you through some solutions, whether you want to upgrade for optimal security or stick with your current Windows 10 devices.

What Windows version is your device?

First up, before you start ruminating on what new devices you’ll need, check what Windows version your current devices are running. If you purchased a new Windows computer from Geeks on Wheels in the last 2 years, you can rest assured that it will be running Windows 11.

If you have a device or older computers, check what version of Windows they’re running on by pressing and holding down on the Windows logo key and the R key. After that, type winver in the Open box, and then select OK. Or, read our blog which covers how to check your OS version in detail by clicking here! To check if your device meets the minimum requirements to update, read this Windows article.

Start preparing for Windows 10 end-of-life now!

It’s a while away yet, but don’t put off worrying about Windows 10 end of support! Why? With such a global shift, demand for Windows 11 devices is likely to skyrocket closer to the end of support for Windows 10, most likely leading to a shift in prices too. So, you’ll want ample notice to budget! Additionally, you should give yourself time to evaluate what options might personally suit you, that way when the time comes, you’re not rushing to make a decision!

What does this mean for businesses?

If you are in a business, such demands impacting price and availability will affect how effectively you transition your business to Windows 11. You’ll most likely need to replace multiple computers, so it’s essential you start planning early, ensuring you have sufficient time, resources and cash flow to transition smoothly without facing disruptions from unsupported devices. You might even want to spread the upgrades over time, rather than all at once!

Don’t want to make the move to Windows 11?

There are a couple of other options if you really don’t want to make the move to Windows 11 devices. These include cloud-based migration or enrolling for extended security updates from Microsoft for Windows 10 users. Microsoft’s extended security updates will require you to enrol.

So, we can explore these options for you and/or your business if you really want to stick to your old devices. However, we would personally highly recommend opting for newer devices with an up-to-date operating system for the best performance and security.

Want to discuss upgrade options?

At Geeks on Wheels, all of our Windows-based devices on offer operate on Windows 11. This means you can be confident that any new device purchases through us will stand the test of time and ensure you are fully up-to-date. If you’d like to talk further with one of our Geeks about your options going forward, give us a call today!
