A new year is the perfect excuse for a fresh start, and that includes your tech! We all make New Year’s resolutions for ourselves, but what about the devices we rely on every single day? Leave your bad tech habits behind in 2025 and start fresh in 2026. We have a simple tech checklist that will make sure you’re doing the right things for your technology this year.

Update your device!

If you read our blogs or emails regularly, then you’ve probably had enough of us telling you to update your computer.
With the Windows 10 EOL having been and gone, we spent a lot of 2025 reminding people to update.

But, even if you’re using a Mac or a Windows 11 device, you need to stay on top of updates.

Not surprisingly MacOS and Windows 11 have already rolled out updates in 2026. There have also been security patches and updates released for Microsoft Office, Google Chrome and other popular programs. Updates are constant and if you don’t keep up to date, then your device could be at risk. To check for updates to your operating system it’s simple. On Apple devices, go into Settings > General > Software Update > Update Now. On Windows devices go to Start > Settings > Windows Update, then click Check for updates. There are some other ways which are listed in this handy blog.

Still using Windows 10? It’s time to make the transition because extended security updates won’t be around forever, and your device will start to fall behind. Speak to the team about options today!

Backup your files

When was the last time you backed up your device? Keeping a backup of your precious files is an important step many of us overlook. Sadly photos, documents, and files can disappear without warning for a range of reasons. Due to things like accidental deletion, hardware failures, power issues, ransomware, or malware attacks. These events often happen without any warning. Recovering your data can be very difficult or even impossible! This means it’s the perfect inclusion on our 2026 tech checklist. Whilst backing up your files, take the time to organise things so they are easier to find down the line.

Incorporating regular backups into your tech routine is a great way to protect yourself from surprises! Whether you prefer cloud backups, external hard drives, or a mix of both, having a recent backup ensures your files are safe, no matter what happens. Your data is at greater risk if not backed up. Make backing up a habit in the new year, it’s definitely a smart move!

Backups can be physical, on external hard drives or cloud-based, using storage plans with providers like Apple’s iCloud, Google Drive or Microsoft’s OneDrive — these are technically called data synchronisations and are not as secure as true backups. If you delete a synced file from OneDrive, this file is deleted everywhere. That means that if a file is accidentally deleted, you don’t have a copy of it saved elsewhere.

Important Reminder

Using a hard drive or USB? Connect the drive or USB to your computer and use the built-in backup tool. (Time Machine for Mac or File History for Windows). Just remember to store your backup separately and avoid leaving it plugged into your device all the time. If a power surge were to happen or a virus found its way into your computer, it could potentially jump onto your backup drive.

Ensure your antivirus is active

Is your antivirus active? Have you even checked? Start 2026 with 100% peace of mind.
First of all, you’ll need to be sure that you have a premium antivirus installed. We recommend Malwarebytes Premium.

If you already have antivirus software on your device, ensure it’s active. Simply open up the software, and you should see a banner that says something like secure, active or protected. If the banner says activate or renew, your antivirus protection may have expired. For more details relevant to your specific antivirus software, we’ve put a list together here.

Whilst you have your antivirus open, run a system scan of your device to check for any unwanted viruses. If the scan finds anything, follow the onscreen steps to fix it. If a serious virus or malware is detected, give us a call for a thorough device clear-out and virus removal.

Review and update your security

When did you last update your passwords? Have you enabled 2FA or MFA on all of your important accounts? What private information can people find out about you from your online profiles?

The new year is the perfect time to review all of this. If you’d like to know if your login details have been compromised in a data breach, we suggest checking on the website haveibeenpwned.com. This website will let you know if your login details have been released in a data breach. If they have don’t be alarmed. Just make sure to update your passwords and enable MFA on any of the affected accounts.

  • Review your passwords – Make sure you’re using a different one for each login and update any compromised details with new strong passwords.
  • Enable 2FA/MFA on all accounts – For important logins, like banks, email accounts, social media platforms and any accounts with personal information, this is a must-do.
  • Review your privacy settings – Do people really need to know your whereabouts and personal information? Consider updating your privacy settings for your social media profiles so only people you know can find out information about you. You can even stop strangers from sending you unwanted friend requests.

Need help upgrading your operating system or getting your security in order, well Geeks on Wheels is the perfect team to help. Our devices give us access to our finances, communication,  healthcare and businesses or work, so ensuring they are safeguarded and ready for the year ahead is important. You wouldn’t drive an unserviced car, don’t treat a computer any differently. Let the experts tick off your 2026 tech checklist. Book today!

5 of the Best Mobile Games of the Last 20 Years https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/mobile-devices/5-of-the-best-mobile-games-of-the-last-20-years/ Thu, 15 Jan 2026 03:32:15 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=19498

Mobile gaming has come a very, very long way. What once started as pixelated time-killers on tiny screens has turned into a global industry rivalling console and PC gaming! Chances are, whether you’re a gamer or not, you’ve played at least one of these games… or watched someone next to you on the bus play them a little too intensely.

To celebrate us turning 20, we’re taking a look at just how far mobile games have come. The past 20 years have been filled with titles that defined eras, drained batteries, and somehow made “just five more minutes” a universal lie. So strap in, buckle up, and let’s take a drive through memory lane, highlighting 5 of the best mobile games of the last 20 years!

Subway Surfers (4 Billion+ Downloads)

Long before the game was used to satisfy Gen Z’s diminished attention span on TikTok brain-rot videos, it was once the most downloaded mobile game of the decade. Released in 2012, this endless runner became a global phenomenon thanks to its bright visuals, simple controls, and extremely addictive gameplay.

The premise is straightforward: run, dodge, jump, and slide your way through train tracks while escaping a grumpy inspector. But what really made Subway Surfers stand out was its accessibility. Anyone could pick it up, play for 30 seconds or 30 minutes, and feel like they were improving!

What’s helped Subway Surfers stay relevant for so long is how often the developers refresh the game. Regular updates, themed locations, seasonal events, and new characters keep the game feeling familiar but never stale! It’s the kind of game that lives on phones for years. It quietly waits to steal your attention whenever you have a spare moment.

Pokémon GO (1 Billion+ Downloads)

People playing Pokémon GO

When Pokémon GO launched in 2016, the world briefly agreed on one thing: we were all going outside! Parks, beaches, and footpaths suddenly filled with people staring at their phones, hunting virtual creatures.

By blending augmented reality with real-world exploration, Pokémon GO changed what people expected from mobile games. It encouraged players to get outside and interact with the real world in ways mobile games hadn’t done before. You didn’t just play it on the couch; it pushed you to walk, explore, and even travel.

The social side of the game also played a huge role in its success. Community days, raids, and in-person events turned what could have been a solo experience into something shared. Even years later, it’s still one of the best examples of how mobile games can bring people together. Pokémon GO’s unique ability to bring the masses together during its prime easily makes it one of the best mobile games of the last 20 years!

Clash of Clans (790 Million+ Downloads)

Clash of Clans Image

If you were in school during the peak of this game’s popularity, you’d know few games have dominated lunch breaks and spare moments quite like Clash of Clans. This strategy game launched in 2012, introducing millions of players to base building, resource management and the joy (and frustration) of waiting for upgrades to finish.

At its core, Clash of Clans is about patience and planning. Build your village, train your troops, and defend against attacks from other players around the world. Join a clan, and suddenly the game becomes as social as it is strategic.

Its long-term success comes from how invested players become in their progress. Villages take months or even years to perfect, which creates a strong sense of ownership. Add regular updates, balance changes, and competitive events, and you’ve got a game that keeps players coming back long after the initial download!

Plants vs. Zombies (500 Million+ Downloads)

Plants vs. Zombies Gameplay

Plants vs. Zombies is one of those games that looks innocent… until you realise how much time you’ve sunk into it. Released in 2009, this tower defence classic combined humour, strategy, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting! The concept is delightfully odd; players place an army of plants on a front lawn to defend a house from waves of zombies. Each plant has a specific ability, and success depends far more on planning than fast reflexes.

What really sets Plant vs. Zombies apart is how approachable it made strategy games feel. It slowly introduced new mechanics without overwhelming players, making it perfect for casual gamers while still offering depth for those who wanted a challenge. It’s clever, funny, and surprisingly tactical. Which is why it’s still fondly remembered and played today, making it one of the best mobile games of the last 20 years!

Angry Birds 2 (450 Million+ Downloads)

Angry Birds Image

The original Angry Birds was everywhere when it launched in 2009, and Angry Birds 2 built on that success with new mechanics, better visuals, and more strategic gameplay.

The idea behind the game is to sling birds at mischievous pigs in poorly constructed towers. Each bird has different abilities. The player has to find successful strategies for each level to pop the pigs hiding within and around the towers. Angry Birds 2 added depth without losing the pick-up-and-play charm that made the original so popular. The creators of the game have since made different versions, such as Angry Birds: Star Wars and Angry Birds: Transformers. But Angry Birds 2 remains their most popular title, with the game still receiving updates 10 years after its original release.

Despite being very different, these are often called some of the best mobile games of the last 20 years. They share simple controls, strong visual style, and the ability to hook players almost immediately. Easy to pick up but hard to put down, they fit perfectly into spare moments throughout the day.

Over the last 20 years, games like these have helped shape how we use our phones. Pushing demand for better screens, faster processors, and smoother performance. The downside is that all of that power comes at a cost, especially when it comes to battery life and device longevity.

If your phone is running hot, draining faster than it used to, or struggling to keep up, mobile gaming could be part of the reason. Modern games are far more demanding than they once were, and older devices can really feel the strain. That’s where we can
help! Whether it’s optimising performance, sorting battery issues, or helping you decide when an upgrade actually makes sense, we’ve got your back. Can’t be having your phone crashing right before a high score!

Tech Trends and Predictions for 2026 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/ai/tech-trends-and-predictions-for-2026/ Tue, 23 Dec 2025 23:40:48 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=19448 What tech trends do we expect to emerge or resurge in 2026? Will AI completely dominate the tech world? Will Apple finally release an iPhone that actually feels innovative? Is there ever going to be a foolproof way for Grandma to tell that a video of a bicycle riding giraffe riding is AI-generated?

While we can’t answer all of those, we’ve put on our thinking caps and pulled together some tech predictions for 2026. AI is impossible to ignore, but we’ve made a conscious effort to look beyond the hype. Exploring what else might shape the tech landscape next year.

Rising Component Prices

We’ve already seen the cost of RAM begin to skyrocket, rising nearly 50 percent in the latter stages of 2025. This tech trend is expected to continue into 2026. Other components, including storage and GPUs, are also increasing in price. This is largely driven by the rapid growth of AI, which requires enormous amounts of computing power. Current supply chains are struggling to keep up.

Globally, data centre capacity is expected to triple by 2030, and all of that expansion requires vast amounts of hardware. As a result, consumers are increasingly taking a back seat while large commercial clients are prioritised. Earlier this year, Micron, one of the world’s leading memory manufacturers, confirmed it would stop producing its Crucial line of consumer RAM and SSDs. The company has instead chosen to focus on meeting demand for high-powered artificial intelligence hardware.

“The AI-driven growth in the data centre has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage. Micron has made the difficult decision to exit the Crucial consumer business in order to improve supply and support for our larger, strategic customers in faster-growing segments,” said Sumit Sadana, EVP and Chief Business Officer at Micron Technology.

What does this mean for consumers?

If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your device, waiting may not be your friend. Prices are unlikely to soften in the short term.

More Autonomous Robots

Autonomous devices are going to be one of the main tech trends of 2026. They are becoming more common, from warehouse robots and cute delivery bots to automated production lines and fully autonomous cars. While robots have often felt like a gimmick in the past, 2026 is likely to see more meaningful adoption. This is especially true in industrial and logistics environments.

As AI systems improve, autonomous robots are becoming better at learning, correcting mistakes, and adapting to complex tasks. Large warehouses, manufacturing facilities, and supply chains are expected to lean further into automation to improve efficiency and reduce labour shortages. Fully driverless vehicles will continue to expand in controlled environments, such as delivery routes, mining, and transport hubs. That said, widespread consumer adoption is still likely to be slow, with regulation, safety concerns, and public trust remaining major barriers.

2026 Tech Predictions – Improved Cybersecurity

AI has introduced new security risks, including voice cloning, video deepfakes, and more convincing phishing scams. However, it’s also becoming one of the most powerful tools on the defensive side.

AI-driven cybersecurity systems can automate threat detection, analyse vast amounts of data, and respond to attacks far faster than traditional tools. By learning normal behaviour patterns, AI can identify unusual activity and flag potential threats early.

AI won’t replace human analysts in 2026. What we do expect is banks, cybersecurity firms, and antivirus providers to roll out more AI-powered protection features. This doesn’t eliminate risk, but it does help level the playing field in what has become a constant back-and-forth between attackers and defenders.

Renewed Energy for the “Great Log Off”

This one comes with a disclaimer: personal opinions may apply.
With social feeds increasingly flooded with AI-generated content, ads, and recycled trends, 2026 could mark a shift towards more intentional tech use. Not a mass digital exodus, but a growing desire to disengage from platforms that no longer feel rewarding.

Gen Z and Millennials are increasingly aware that endless scrolling, shortened attention spans, and unrealistic online content can take a toll on mental health. While people aren’t about to delete every app overnight, we may see more users curating feeds, setting boundaries, or stepping away from certain platforms altogether in favour of real-world connections.

AI Everywhere (Whether You Like It or Not)

In 2026, avoiding AI will be nearly impossible. If you weren’t a fan of Microsoft’s Copilot rollout, brace yourself. AI is expected to be embedded into most major apps, websites, and devices by default. From drafting emails and managing calendars to shopping recommendations and customer support, the amount of effort required from users will continue to shrink.

That said, AI fatigue is real. While convenience is a major selling point, not everyone is comfortable handing over more control, data and personal information. Expect a growing tension between automation and user choice, with people becoming more selective about when AI helps and when it gets in the way.

What this means for everyday tech users

Tech in 2026 is getting more powerful, more expensive, and more complex. From rising hardware costs to AI baked into everyday devices, staying on top of it all is becoming harder for everyday users. That’s where Geeks on Wheels can help. A Proudly Kiwi Service https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/geek-life/a-proudly-kiwi-service/ Thu, 20 Nov 2025 02:22:09 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=19310

Geeks on Wheels is a proudly Kiwi service. Founded in Wellington and based there ever since. Our technicians are everyday Geeks helping everyday Kiwis with everyday tech.

Over the last 20 years, we have gained a unique and comprehensive understanding of the tech issues that Kiwis face on a daily basis. From campervan satellite setups to small business tech solutions and everything in between. Geeks on Wheels has been helping Kiwis stay connected and up to date since 2005. Whilst fixing broken devices and offering solutions to tech annoyances is what makes up most of our day-to-day, it’s helping that’s at our core.

We strive to take every customer on a personalised journey through advice, knowledge and education about how technology can benefit them in and around their daily lives. Which is why our mission statement reads… “To be a trusted brand that provides solutions, knowledge and confidence to everyday users of technology”

What started as a small computer repair company in Wellington’s Kilbirnie has grown into a nationwide network of support, solutions and advice.

A Kiwi Service, From the Start

Many people often think that Geeks on Wheels might be a franchise or a foreign-owned company. The truth is, we were born back in 2005 when there was an obvious gap in the market for a great quality, local, computer repair & help service. We’ve remained Kiwi-owned and managed ever since, and our current National Headquarters is just down the road from where we were founded all those years ago.

Although we have grown and size, our uniquely Kiwi attitude, roots, and vibe have not wavered.4

Keeping it Local

We have grown a lot over the years. From one van in the early days, to a fleet of vehicles servicing 16 locations today. Although it might seem logical to focus on the main population centres, we know just how important good, well-functioning tech is to all New Zealanders. Whether you’re in an apartment in downtown Auckland or a lifestyle block in Southland, you need technology for a modern lifestyle.

That’s why our growth has focused on servicing more of the community. The core idea of mobile support means more Kiwis can access the assistance they need. We’ve managed to further achieve this by heading to new regions and expanding our remote support helpline service. Now more Kiwis than ever have access to reliable, trustworthy mobile tech support.

Local Helpline

Whilst most known for our iconic “we come to you service”, we’re also proud to offer GeekPlus – our remote support membership, which now has more than 4,000 members. Each member enjoys unlimited access to our Geek Helpline.

When most people think of remote IT support, they picture offshore call centres. We’re proud to say all our remote support technicians are based right here in New Zealand. They’re Kiwi tech users too, so they understand the unique issues many of us face – from patchy rural Wi-Fi to dodgy modems and everything in between.

In an age where tech support is often outsourced overseas, our local roots matter more than ever. The reality is, our reliance on the online world continues to increase, along with our exposure to its many risks. That’s why ensuring Kiwis get the best and safest online experience is one of our key goals, and we feel a uniquely Kiwi company is best suited to help with that.

A Certified New Zealand Service

We’ve always been proud to be a New Zealand company. Being Kiwi-owned and operated builds trust with our customer base and allows us to keep our uniquely Kiwi culture. So we thought, why not show it with pride?

That’s why we became a certified licence holder as a New Zealand Service™. The New Zealand Made logo is iconic, it’s easy to recognise, and it means so much. We are proud to incorporate it into our service and show it off with pride!

If your technology is misbehaving, you need a new device, or perhaps just some guidance with your tech Geeks on Wheels can help. Simply call the team on 0800 424 335 and enjoy dealing with a local Kiwi company from start to finish!

New Benefits of Technology – Improving Cognitive Abilities https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/digital-wellbeing/new-benefits-of-technology-improving-cognitive-abilities/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 01:11:34 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=19153 Technology has been making our lives easier for years. From improving communication through email and social media to unlimited shopping from the comfort of our living rooms.

However, many users, especially those more advanced in years, often believe that technology is bad. It makes people antisocial; kids are always trapped on their devices playing games, and exposure to screens damages their eyes.

Whilst some of these points are true, the benefits of consumer technology, could be beneficial in more ways than one.

New research suggests technology could help cognitive skills

Recent analysis from the University of Texas, which looked the effects of technology on more than 400,000 people over 50 showcased some exciting results. It found that users of computers, smartphones and the internet or a mix of all, performed better on cognitive tests. They also had lower rates of cognitive impairment or dementia diagnoses, compared to those who avoided technology use.

It is unclear whether the technology staves off mental decline, or whether people with better cognitive skills simply use them more, but the results are exciting nonetheless.

“For the first generation that grew up using digital tools, there’s actually a link with better cognitive functioning,” said Dr Jared Benge, a clinical neuropsychologist at UT Health Austin’s Comprehensive Memory Center. “It’s a more hopeful message than you might expect, especially with all the talk about brain rot, brain drain, and so-called digital dementia.”

At Geeks on Wheels, we were stoked to read about this study. Our mission is “To be a trusted brand that provides solutions, knowledge and confidence to everyday users of technology”. We aim to not just solve tech issues but give users the confidence they need to get the most out of their technology.

So what does this mean? Is more TikTok good for my brain?

The researchers say more work is needed to fully unpack the findings, but they suspect it’s a two-way street. Dr Jared Benge explains that people with stronger thinking skills are naturally more likely to pick up digital devices, but at the same time, using that tech can deliver real cognitive benefits.

Dr Benge says that digital tools can help people take on more complex activities and stay socially connected, both of which are linked to healthier ageing brains. They can also act as a backup system, making day-to-day life easier. Think GPS for navigation or reminders to pay bills and take medications.

So endlessly scrolling social media or binging Netflix constantly is not likely to give your brain the best workout. But, by using technology to help you complete daily tasks and adapting with technology, you just might improve your cognitive abilities.

Are you finding your tech is all getting a bit too much? Maybe the stress and hassle are outweighing the enjoyment? Then it might be time to have a Geek help you simplify. Modern technology should be easy, convenient and intuitive. Our friendly technicians can help set things up to work in the way that’s best for you. We’ll help make your tech feel simple, supportive, and stress-free.

Issues With Recent Satellite Updates https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/geek-life/recent-satellite-updates/ Fri, 23 May 2025 01:14:04 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=18669

Have you been experiencing difficulties watching TV since changes to satellite reception happened in New Zealand on April 15th 2025? You may need to install KiwiSat satellite updates. In April 2025, New Zealand’s Satellite TV services shifted from the old Optus D2 satellite to the KoreaSat6 satellite. This was due to the Optus D2 satellite reaching the end of its operational life. KoreaSat6 will serve as a temporary satellite until 2027, when the new Optus satellite is launched.

Source: TraiLite Group

What does this mean for me?

For most people around the country watching Freeview and Sky TV, this shift went relatively unnoticed. The changeover happened in the early hours of the morning, and most Sky and Freeview boxes were able to shift seamlessly between satellites. However, for some users, the switch over has not been so seamless, and if you’re reading this blog, you’re likely in this group.

Many motorhome, caravan and boat owners have experienced difficulties. Some satellite dishes or receivers require software updates or an overall upgrade to a new receiver. One particular brand of satellite dish that a few users have struggled to update is the KiwiSat dishes made by Apollo. Thankfully, there are some simple solutions to help get you back to watching your favourite shows.

In-software screenshot of the update process – KiwiSat.

How to update my satellite or receiver?

If you are experiencing issues like those listed above, then you likely require an update of some sort. Whether that is an update for your satellite dish or for your receiver. If you are using a KiwiSat dish, they have an informative video on their YouTube channel. This goes through the step-by-step process of installing an update onto your KiwiSat dish.

This video is a great guide and should be able to help you get your TV back on track. However, if after watching you are a little confused or require some assistance Geeks on Wheels can help! We have noticed that downloading the required software can be more difficult depending on the user’s device. You will also need to ensure you have the required equipment.

Tips to help with the satellite updates

Want to install the updates yourself? If you have a KiwiSat Satellite, make sure you have a suitable laptop computer and a printer cable (USB-A to USB-B). Head to the Apollo Website and download their KiwiSat and SR-Mecatronic Satellite Antenna Software Updates. Then follow their instructional video step by step.

If the software download doesn’t go successfully, you may need to update some security settings on your device, including core isolation and memory integrity.

If you have a Sky receiver and haven’t been able to watch Sky since the satellite switch, you might also need to update. Users of NZSAT devices shouldn’t need to install software updates but may need to update the channel list on their decoders. They have some straightforward instructions listed on their website too.

Want a simpler solution?

If all of that seems a bit much, Geeks on Wheels has two great options to help get you back on track. Our Satellite switch service can be completed onsite by one of our expert technicians or remotely over the phone via remote access (provided you have the required equipment onsite). We’ve even slashed the prices offering a special rate of $125 for the onsite service and dropping our standard call-out fee. For the remote service it is a discounted rate of $75 for expert assistance wherever you are (as long as you have reception and internet).

Jim fixed not only a new problem—losing access to Word and Firefox, both of which happened unexpectedly and at the most inconvenient time—but also a longstanding printing issue that at least three others had tried in vain to fix. The Helpline is easy to use and cost-efficient, particularly if you’re lucky enough to have someone like Jim at the other end of the phone.

All the staff I have dealt with at Geeks on Wheels, be it Vaughan or whoever, have been a pleasure to deal with and it’s so great to have a company who most obviously puts their clients first with outstanding service—the yearly subscription has already paid for itself a hundred times over already. Thanks, team!

Maria at MicroMed (Geek Plus Business Member)

I have only praise for the Geek team. After initial difficulties with a new printer and a failing newish PC, all problems were eventually resolved in minimal time to my total satisfaction. The value of my Geek Plus Premium membership was demonstrated fully, and I can only recommend it strongly to everyone else.

Amazingly, I found my way around the website to pay my Geeks Plus subscription, which I have used several times in the past year—sometimes for small issues with an easy answer that I had no idea how to remedy. These guys and gals are angels!

Geeks on Wheels is turning 20! https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/geek-life/geeks-on-wheels-is-turning-20/ Thu, 30 Jan 2025 00:22:35 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=18313 We’re turning 20! That’s older than the iPhone, Android smartphones and even Twitter. When Geeks on Wheels first launched, floppy disks were still a thing, Amazon’s most-sold tech item was the iPod Nano and Google’s most-searched tech item was the Xbox 360.

Thank you to our amazing customers and team members who have shaped our journey and what it is we do so special and rewarding. A lot of things have changed since our mobile technicians first started visiting Kiwi homes and offices. But, one thing has remained unwavering, our commitment to providing an exceptional customer experience. All whilst providing solutions, knowledge and confidence to everyday users of technology. Throughout our 20th year, we will be taking a trip down memory lane reflecting on some of the people and milestones that have shaped our journey as a company and made the last 20 years so extraordinary.  So stay tuned for these features to come throughout the year.

20 YEARS IN NUMBERS

  • Over 120,000 Kiwis helped
Since opening the doors in 2005 our mobile technicians have provided invaluable tech support and assistance to thousands of Kiwis across the country. Helping small businesses set up their IT systems, families connect to the internet for the first time and scam victims ensure their devices are safe to use once again.
  • Over 8,000 5-star reviews
We are so proud of the work our technicians put into helping our customers, going above and beyond simple tech repairs. By explaining as they go and skipping the tech jargon, our technicians are able to take customers to a better place with their technology.
  • 13 locations and counting
Ever since day one we have been wanting to offer tech support to more people in more places. Our helpline service lets us reach those hard-to-reach areas, but nothing quite compares to onsite support from an expert Geek. Coming into our 20th year we now service 13 locations across New Zealand, after beginning with just one service area in 2005. Our technicians are now spread across the country and we’re excited to see where Geeks on Wheels will be launching next.
  • More than 290,000 onsite visits
Even we were amazed when we searched for that number. Thank you New Zealand for letting us into your homes, offices, coffee carts, boats, cow sheds and workshops 290,000 times. We know each visit has greeted us with a unique tech issue to solve. Here’s to the next 290,000.

20 YEARS IN MILESTONES

  • Our first customer
Not long after placing our first advertisement in the Wellington Yellowpages the phones began ringing and Geeks on Wheels first customer was helped with email issues and antivirus installation. We are proud to say that 20 years later Barbara is still a loyal customer to this day.
  • Expanding our service areas
After laying down our foundations in Wellington and growing our team, it was time to give New Zealanders in other locations the tech support they deserve. This started with us opening two new locations in 2007. Namely, Auckland and Christchurch.
  • 20,000th customer
By early 2010 and after an exciting almost 5 years in business we had helped 20,000 customers. A milestone for any small business.
  • Launch of the Geek Helpline
Our remote support service has been a game changer for businesses and individuals across the country. Each day our helpline technicians help with scores of tech issues big and small. Saving customers time and money and ensuring they can get back to using their devices as quickly as possible.
  • Geek+ membership
Following on from the success of the Geek Helpline and realising the need for ongoing tech support for business and domestic users in New Zealand Geek+ was born. Our unique wrap-around tech support membership. Offering unlimited remote support, device health and security checks and discounted onsite visits, it is peace and mind neatly packaged in a bundle. There are far too many amazing milestones to list, including the launch of GeekSafe™ our scam protection service, continued growth into various regions including our recent arrival in Nelson and numerous additional service offerings including Security Camera installation.

The last 20 years have been amazing and our wonderful customers have been there to support us every step of the way. We couldn’t have done it without you and look forward to making more memories in the years to come. If you’d like to learn more about our journey over the years then check out our history & background.

The best apps for learning te Reo Māori https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/geek-life/the-best-apps-for-learning-te-reo-maori/ Tue, 24 Sep 2024 22:05:36 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=17882 Kia ora e te whānau, ko Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. It’s Māori Language Week, an annual celebration for all New Zealanders to show their support for the Māori language. This year’s theme is ‘Ake ake ake – A Forever Language’. Representing the resilience, adaptability and endurance of te Reo Māori.

Have you been wanting to kickstart your te Reo learning journey? Or, is it time to brush up on your skills? Apps are the perfect way to build your te Reo Māori skills and get the most out of your mahi. In this blog, we’ve put together three of our favourite apps designed to help you improve your te Reo Māori skills. So read along to learn exactly how these te Reo Māori learning apps work and why you should download them!

Learn te Reo Māori with the Ako Tahi mobile app

Ako Tahi, means learn together and with this handy app you can learn common Māori phrases through a couple of different methods. To learn te Reo Māori phrases by category you can easily select one of many tile options on the Rapu or Search page. This will display a range of phrases relevant to that category, with audio clips and translations. You can also search phrases including a certain word by typing that into the search bar. For example, searching up the word “coffee” or “kawhe” and all phrases including the word coffee will be displayed.

Lastly, there are challenges or He Wero in the middle section of the app. These are short audio clips of a phrase where the aim is to listen and test your skills. This is to see if you can remember the phrases, meaning and translation. So start building your knowledge today! Download Ako Tahi to learn and practice te Reo Māori phrases!

Learn through conversation thanks to Kōrerorero

Kōrerorero means conversations, so it’s no surprise the Kōrerorero app is all about learning through conversation. The app was developed by Te Ara Poutama, the faculty of Māori and Indigenous development and the altLAB at Auckland University of Technology.

It’s a fun and engaging app that educates through whakarongo (listening) and tāruarua (repetition). It uses audio clips of common scenarios and features different lessons that focus on essential phrases and vocabulary. Hearing te Reo Māori used in real life everyday situations helps immerse the learner in the language. This makes the whole learning process feel more natural and less rigid. So, get listening and start learning today by downloading Kōrerorero.

Discover te Reo Māori all around you with Kupu

Our third and final app recommendation to help you learn te Reo Māori is Kupu. Kupu is great for visual learners and those wanting to grow their vocabulary quickly. Kupu is a spark-sponsored app, powered by Google technology and resources from Te Aka Māori dictionary. It conveniently uses the camera on your mobile device to instantly translate objects around you into te Reo Māori. Meaning you can quickly and easily find out the Māori word for common items and places.

Simply open the app, snap a photo of an item nearby and see it translated in real-time. Kupu even lets you save the image translation for future reference! This makes it even easier to learn on the go.

Ka pai on taking the first steps to learning te Reo Māori. Make sure to download these 3 apps and boost your te Reo Māori learning journey! With common phrases, everyday vocab and general conversations covered with these apps you’re bound to notice a boost in your huinga kupu (vocabulary). As always, if you need any help getting apps downloaded or devices upgraded, be sure to give the friendly team at Geeks on Wheels a call on 0800 424 335!
