Geeks on Wheels is a proudly Kiwi service. Founded in Wellington and based there ever since. Our technicians are everyday Geeks helping everyday Kiwis with everyday tech.

Over the last 20 years, we have gained a unique and comprehensive understanding of the tech issues that Kiwis face on a daily basis. From campervan satellite setups to small business tech solutions and everything in between. Geeks on Wheels has been helping Kiwis stay connected and up to date since 2005. Whilst fixing broken devices and offering solutions to tech annoyances is what makes up most of our day-to-day, it’s helping that’s at our core.

We strive to take every customer on a personalised journey through advice, knowledge and education about how technology can benefit them in and around their daily lives. Which is why our mission statement reads… “To be a trusted brand that provides solutions, knowledge and confidence to everyday users of technology”

What started as a small computer repair company in Wellington’s Kilbirnie has grown into a nationwide network of support, solutions and advice.

A Kiwi Service, From the Start

Many people often think that Geeks on Wheels might be a franchise or a foreign-owned company. The truth is, we were born back in 2005 when there was an obvious gap in the market for a great quality, local, computer repair & help service. We’ve remained Kiwi-owned and managed ever since, and our current National Headquarters is just down the road from where we were founded all those years ago.

Although we have grown and size, our uniquely Kiwi attitude, roots, and vibe have not wavered.4

Keeping it Local

We have grown a lot over the years. From one van in the early days, to a fleet of vehicles servicing 16 locations today. Although it might seem logical to focus on the main population centres, we know just how important good, well-functioning tech is to all New Zealanders. Whether you’re in an apartment in downtown Auckland or a lifestyle block in Southland, you need technology for a modern lifestyle.

That’s why our growth has focused on servicing more of the community. The core idea of mobile support means more Kiwis can access the assistance they need. We’ve managed to further achieve this by heading to new regions and expanding our remote support helpline service. Now more Kiwis than ever have access to reliable, trustworthy mobile tech support.

Local Helpline

Whilst most known for our iconic “we come to you service”, we’re also proud to offer GeekPlus – our remote support membership, which now has more than 4,000 members. Each member enjoys unlimited access to our Geek Helpline.

When most people think of remote IT support, they picture offshore call centres. We’re proud to say all our remote support technicians are based right here in New Zealand. They’re Kiwi tech users too, so they understand the unique issues many of us face – from patchy rural Wi-Fi to dodgy modems and everything in between.

In an age where tech support is often outsourced overseas, our local roots matter more than ever. The reality is, our reliance on the online world continues to increase, along with our exposure to its many risks. That’s why ensuring Kiwis get the best and safest online experience is one of our key goals, and we feel a uniquely Kiwi company is best suited to help with that.

A Certified New Zealand Service

We’ve always been proud to be a New Zealand company. Being Kiwi-owned and operated builds trust with our customer base and allows us to keep our uniquely Kiwi culture. So we thought, why not show it with pride?

That’s why we became a certified licence holder as a New Zealand Service™. The New Zealand Made logo is iconic, it’s easy to recognise, and it means so much. We are proud to incorporate it into our service and show it off with pride!

If your technology is misbehaving, you need a new device, or perhaps just some guidance with your tech Geeks on Wheels can help. Simply call the team on 0800 424 335 and enjoy dealing with a local Kiwi company from start to finish!

Richard and his wife, Stacey, have four sons plus a grandson who calls him “Koko” after an adorable attempt at “Koro.” When he’s not helping customers, you’ll find him trout fishing, landscaping, or fixing things around home.

Holidays for Richard are all about relaxing, like his recent trip to Flaxmill Bay, an annual tradition with old school friends. After moving to Rotorua, he wanted a role where he could connect with people and his community, making Geeks on Wheels the perfect fit. Friendly, reliable, and solution-driven, Richard is always keen to help others feel confident with their tech.

How New Zealand Banks Are Keeping You Safe https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/security-safety/how-new-zealand-banks-are-keeping-you-safe/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 23:55:46 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=19163

These are a few of the exciting internet banking security features that banks are keeping you safe from banking scams in 2025. We often cover the doom and gloom of internet scams, reminding readers to secure their accounts and use strong passwords. With Kiwis losing over $1.6 billion to online threats in 2024, it’s clear scams are a serious risk. But 2025 is looking brighter; banks are introducing new tools and protections to help keep your hard-earned money safer than ever.

Discover our favourite internet banking security features from Kiwi banks. Make sure that if you’re a customer, you make the most of these exciting new features. This is not an exhaustive list, so be sure to research what security features your bank has.

One major feature that has now rolled out to all major Kiwi banks is Confirmation of Payee. You’d have likely noticed this if you’ve recently paid someone new. This is when the banking app or website checks to make sure the name and account details match up, ensuring you’re not paying the wrong person.

ASB mobile banking app

New ASB security features

Aside from the standards like 2FA and Face ID, ASB has made some exciting announcements in 2025 designed to keep Kiwis safer when banking or shopping online.

Caller Check

Caller Check is ASB’s latest innovation in its fight against scammers. The tool helps protect customers from impersonation scams by allowing ASB customers to confirm they’re speaking with an actual ASB employee when they receive a call from the bank. This is done using a push notification from the ASB Mobile Banking App. Scammers will often call victims claiming to be from trusted organisations, including banks. This feature allows you to verify that simply and easily, using a trusted app already on your device.

24/7 Fraud Line

Although launched in 2024, the ASB 24/7 fraud line is a great resource for customers who require urgent help. The helpline is able to provide advice and assistance to victims and potential victims around the clock.

Westpac mobile banking app

New Westpac security features

ASB is not the only bank to roll out new security features and tools designed to keep its customers safe. Westpac Bank has improved online shopping security for its customers with its latest security tool.

Digital Westpac Card

A digital card has a few benefits to users, including convenience and accessibility but the main drawcard is the added security provided by a dynamic security code. This replaces your regular 3-digit CVC on the back of your card and changes every 24 hours in the Westpac One app. This means you can shop with extra peace of mind, knowing that if your card details are entered into an unsafe website or recorded by scammers, they won’t be able to continue shopping with your card details once the CVC resets. Westpac is the first New Zealand Bank to offer a dynamic security code feature alongside instant issuance for debit cards.

24/7 Helpline

Just like ASB, Westpac bank also has a 24/7 helpline for urgent assistance. Meaning as soon as you are suspicious that something isn’t quite right, you can reach out to the bank and get things sorted.

BNZ mobile banking app

Recent BNZ Internet Banking Security Improvements

BNZ also has some great security features that go above the likes of 2FA and in-app card blocking. Their biggest new features were introduced late last year and are designed to improve customer safety and reduce the number of successful scam attacks.

Online Banking Lock

This feature lets customers disable all online banking activity if they suspect a scammer has gained access to their accounts. BNZ says “While anyone who suspects they’re the victim of a scammer should always call their bank immediately, this tool gives customers the ability to lock their online banking while they’re making the call.”

To regain access, customers must verify their identity in a branch. This is a great feature with instant results, saving precious seconds in the important time immediately following or during a scam attack.

Voice identification

Again, not an entirely new feature but one that is sure to provide some peace of mind. BNZ has extra protection when you call to speak with the Contact Centre. This is in the form of a pre-set voice identification, allowing the bank to securely identify callers.

No More NetGuard

NetGuard cards were seen as a breakthrough for internet banking security in 2006 when they were first launched. Of course in the nearly 20 years since then the online banking landscape has changed a lot. BNZ has used an app-based system to authenticate logins since 2012 but has only recently scrapped the NetGuard option altogether.

ANZ mobile banking app

ANZ Security Features

ANZ has a stack of security features designed to keep internet banking users and online shoppers safe. These include their versions of some of the features mentioned above.

ANZ Dynamic Security Code

This feature is the same as Westpac’s, with the changing CVC number, however ANZ’s option has a shorter window, changing every 12 hours. This acts as an extra layer of protection for your ANZ Visa card when shopping online.

Control How Your Card Can Be Used

One interesting security feature that not every bank has is the ability to turn off certain types of purchasing. In the ANZ goMoney app, users can turn on and off online shopping, overseas in-person purchases, contactless and online gambling purchases.

This gives you peace of mind and added security by limiting what exactly a scammer could do if they gained access to your card details.

Biometric identification

You may have seen videos of this online already. ANZ has numerous options for biometric identification, including Voice ID. Voice ID allows you to log in to ANZ Phone Banking or identify yourself with our contact centre with your own unique and secure voiceprint. This is a great extra layer of security, especially if you prefer to do your regular banking over the phone. It can also give you extra security when making payments above $10,000 in the ANZ goMoney app, by verifying your identity using your unique voiceprint.

mobile banking app

Other Good News

Even if you didn’t see your bank mentioned, chances are they have some great security features in place. All of New Zealand’s major banks have 24/7 monitoring, keeping an eye out for suspicious transactions. Most banks now require some form of two-factor authentication. Most also have some form of guarantee or protection in the event you are scammed through no fault of your own. There will be terms and conditions with these, so make sure you’re complying with them whenever you’re using your cards or accessing your accounts.

Need help identifying scams?

In today’s rapidly evolving digital world, online safety has never been more important. At Geeks on Wheels, we understand the need for a reliable defence against the ever-growing threat of online scams. That’s why we’ve developed GeekSafe™ – a membership designed to empower you. New Benefits of Technology – Improving Cognitive Abilities https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/digital-wellbeing/new-benefits-of-technology-improving-cognitive-abilities/ Tue, 30 Sep 2025 01:11:34 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=19153 Technology has been making our lives easier for years. From improving communication through email and social media to unlimited shopping from the comfort of our living rooms.

However, many users, especially those more advanced in years, often believe that technology is bad. It makes people antisocial; kids are always trapped on their devices playing games, and exposure to screens damages their eyes.

Whilst some of these points are true, the benefits of consumer technology, could be beneficial in more ways than one.

New research suggests technology could help cognitive skills

Recent analysis from the University of Texas, which looked the effects of technology on more than 400,000 people over 50 showcased some exciting results. It found that users of computers, smartphones and the internet or a mix of all, performed better on cognitive tests. They also had lower rates of cognitive impairment or dementia diagnoses, compared to those who avoided technology use.

It is unclear whether the technology staves off mental decline, or whether people with better cognitive skills simply use them more, but the results are exciting nonetheless.

“For the first generation that grew up using digital tools, there’s actually a link with better cognitive functioning,” said Dr Jared Benge, a clinical neuropsychologist at UT Health Austin’s Comprehensive Memory Center. “It’s a more hopeful message than you might expect, especially with all the talk about brain rot, brain drain, and so-called digital dementia.”

At Geeks on Wheels, we were stoked to read about this study. Our mission is “To be a trusted brand that provides solutions, knowledge and confidence to everyday users of technology”. We aim to not just solve tech issues but give users the confidence they need to get the most out of their technology.

So what does this mean? Is more TikTok good for my brain?

The researchers say more work is needed to fully unpack the findings, but they suspect it’s a two-way street. Dr Jared Benge explains that people with stronger thinking skills are naturally more likely to pick up digital devices, but at the same time, using that tech can deliver real cognitive benefits.

Dr Benge says that digital tools can help people take on more complex activities and stay socially connected, both of which are linked to healthier ageing brains. They can also act as a backup system, making day-to-day life easier. Think GPS for navigation or reminders to pay bills and take medications.

So endlessly scrolling social media or binging Netflix constantly is not likely to give your brain the best workout. But, by using technology to help you complete daily tasks and adapting with technology, you just might improve your cognitive abilities.

Are you finding your tech is all getting a bit too much? Maybe the stress and hassle are outweighing the enjoyment? Then it might be time to have a Geek help you simplify. Modern technology should be easy, convenient and intuitive. Our friendly technicians can help set things up to work in the way that’s best for you. We’ll help make your tech feel simple, supportive, and stress-free.

16 billion passwords leaked! https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/news-updates/16-billion-passwords-leaked/ Thu, 24 Jul 2025 21:08:33 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=18864

Hey Geek fans! You might’ve seen the headlines lately. There’s been a wave of data leaks hitting some big names. From Mighty Ape to Qantas and plenty more in between! One of the more recent discoveries has led researchers to label it as “the largest leak ever!” In this blog, we’ll break down what this massive 16 billion passwords leaked could mean for you. We’ll also touch on a few other noteworthy breaches, and share some simple ways you can make your data less useful to scammers.

16 billion passwords leaked

In June this year, researchers discovered a massive data breach on the dark web. The breach exposed 16 billion login credentials, including passwords. When we break that number down, it equates to roughly two leaked accounts per person on the planet!

The data is said to be exposed from multiple websites and apps, including social media, VPNs, user accounts and more. Some of the big names said to be involved include reputable companies highly trusted for their security measures, such as Google, Apple and Facebook.

The breach is likely the work of multiple infostealers. Some of the data appears to be recent, not just recycled and repackaged from past breaches.

Other recent data leaks

Before the massive discovery of 16 billion passwords leaked on the dark web, there were already plenty of other major data leaks making headlines on our news feeds.

In May, Mighty Ape the popular online retailer, saw hundreds of its users experiencing a strange glitch. Customers logged into other customer’s accounts. This meant users had access to random stranger’s sensitive information. This included card details, home addresses, emails and order histories. And, they even had the ability to place orders.

Start of July, a Qantas data breach saw around 6 million customers have their data exposed. Fortunately, the breach only affected customers’ names, email addresses, phone numbers, birth dates, and frequent flyer numbers. Qantas emphasised that the breach did not access any credit card details, personal financial information, or passport details. With all this said, researchers are raising alarms. With massive breaches happening every few weeks, it highlights just how far-reaching and persistent data-stealing malware has become.

What is done with your passwords in a data leak

Depending on the security measures you’ve taken and how cyber-smart you are with your accounts, a data leak might barely affect you. Or, it could snowball into something far more serious! There are a lot of different things that can be done with your leaked data. For example, you could be locked out of your own accounts, with scammers demanding a ransom, often in the form of cryptocurrency, to regain access. Scammers can also use your data to steal your identity for malicious purposes. They can send scam messages to your contacts. They can try your passwords on other accounts, monitor what you do online and even repackage and sell your personal information to other infostealers!

How to minimise the usefulness of your data

Whilst you can’t do much to prevent data breaches of large companies, you do control who you give your data to. And, you can help minimise the usefulness of that data.

First up, avoid saving payment details on websites or user portals. This means a breach of your account’s data is less likely to include your payment details. It also means if someone gains access to your account, they won’t be able to go on a shopping spree.

Secondly, make sure you’re using a different password for each of your online accounts. If you reuse the same one everywhere, a single leaked login can put all of your accounts at risk. That’s why we recommend creating unique passwords for each account. And don’t forget to make sure they’re long and strong!

Next, enable two-factor or multi-factor authentication! By enabling 2FA or MFA, you can ensure that even if your password is leaked, an infostealer still wouldn’t be able to access your accounts. This kind of authentication is like a second layer of security. Whether that’s a code sent to another device or a facial/fingerprint scan.

Finally, be cautious about who you give your data to. It pays to think twice before handing over personal information online. Before you do pass on any sensitive data online, ensure the website, app or platform is legitimate and has it users’ best interests in mind.

Dealing with the aftermath of a scam or data leak? Or just keen to boost your online security? Geeks on Wheels can help! From recovering lost data to setting up secure backups and even creating strong passwords as well as how to store them safely, we’ve got you covered. Just Book a Geek today!

Risks Of Not Upgrading to Windows 11 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/security-safety/risks-of-not-upgrading-to-windows-11/ Wed, 11 Jun 2025 01:36:59 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=18750

You’ve likely seen that Windows 10 is ending support on October 14th, 2025. Whether it’s pop-ups on your Windows 10 devices, emails from Geeks on Wheels or articles in the news. Everyone has been talking about it. Microsoft will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance or security fixes for Windows 10 for all users. We have mentioned that those who don’t update will be at risk, but what does this mean? Reminder, this doesn’t apply to those using Apple Mac devices.

The risks of not upgrading to Windows 11 are numerous and varied, depending on how you use your devices. For most users, security is the first and major concern. In time, functionality may also be affected, and for businesses, compliance factors may be an issue. Read on to learn more about the risks of not upgrading.

Want to check if you can upgrade?

Do you have a Windows device and you’re not sure what version it is? Or perhaps you want to try upgrading your current computer before splurging on a new device? Check out our how-to guide for checking your OS and updating.

Increased Security Risks

The major concern for most users and us here at Geeks on Wheels is the end of security fixes for Windows 10. Without security updates your device and systems are vulnerable to a range of cyber threats, including viruses, malware, and hacking attempts. Attackers will exploit new security vulnerabilities to gain access to devices. They may then go on to access or steal data, disrupt operations or manipulate your device. Security updates would usually aim to patch these vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.

This all sounds very doom and gloom but it is the unfortunate reality of a device that is not properly protected. The consequences of such attacks can include financial losses, data breaches and potentially reputational damage. Nobody wants to put themselves at risk unnecessarily, so check if you can upgrade today.

Reduced Software Compatibility

The next major issue will be the lack of updates. Software is always evolving, with new features, requirements and capabilities rolling out constantly. With the recent advancements in AI we can expect that to continue at a rapid pace.

By continuing to use an outdated software version (Windows 10 or earlier), you will be missing out on new features. Windows 11 has numerous new features, including optimised performance, improved security features, Auto HDR, and updated memory management. Not updating doesn’t just mean you will miss out on the improved capabilities of Windows 11. Over time, the popular software and applications you use will also release updates. These will likely not be compatible with older operating system versions.

For example, the latest version of Google Chrome available for Windows 8.1 users is Chrome 109, which was released in January 2023. For up to date users the latest version available is 137.0.7151.68/69. That means users with outdated software will be missing out on nearly 3 years’ worth of security updates, improvements and new features. You might also notice some of your favourite websites or widgets require an up-to-date browser to use or access them.

These flow-on effects of an outdated operating system are numerous, compounding and inconvenient. They also put your device at constant risk. Not only will your device not have security updates from Windows, it will eventually no longer have security updates from new software versions of your favourite programs.

Increased Operational Downtime

Older devices are less efficient. Just like us, computers slow down as they get older. Especially when they can’t be updated anymore. Running older versions of Windows means your devices will not have access to the latest features and updates, which could save you time and increase productivity. This is also true for the software and applications that will fall behind.

Similarly, cyberattacks and security vulnerabilities cost individuals and businesses both time and money. They can often result in lost business and operational disruptions.

Regulatory Compliance

While this one only affects businesses and organisations, it is a great point to note.
By utilising outdated software, even given the numerous risks, you might not be meeting regulatory requirements. Depending on your industry or how you handle data, the risks may vary. Up-to-date and supported operating systems are standard across most industries and ensure the security of your devices, data and systems.

Remember, you don’t necessarily have to purchase a new device to update to Windows 11. If your device is less than 5 years old you might be able to update, provided it meets the minimum hardware requirements.  Whether you’re updating your existing device or looking for a brand new one with Windows 11 pre-installed, Geeks on Wheels are your experts for all things Windows 11. Give the team a call today and they can recommend the perfect device for your needs.

From there, he stepped up as head of RFID label programming, then moved into tech support and eventually managed a branch dealing with automotive diagnostic gear. Safe to say, if it plugs in or needs fixing, Herschel’s your guy.

He’s got a solid set of qualifications too, from CompTIA A+ to Microsoft Azure and Active Directory. His strengths lie in troubleshooting, Windows configuration, setting up LAN and WiFi, and hardware repairs. But don’t box him in – Herschel’s also mechanically minded and loves getting under the bonnet of a car.

Outside of work, you’ll find him spinning tracks as an award-winning DJ, printing his next 3D creation, or jamming on the PlayStation. His all-time favourite movie? 1987’s Robocop. He sums himself up in three words: fun, analytical, and realist. Pretty fitting for someone born before social media was a thing, but still thriving in the digital age.

Issues With Recent Satellite Updates https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/geek-life/recent-satellite-updates/ Fri, 23 May 2025 01:14:04 +0000 https://geeksonwheels.co.nz/?p=18669

Have you been experiencing difficulties watching TV since changes to satellite reception happened in New Zealand on April 15th 2025? You may need to install KiwiSat satellite updates. In April 2025, New Zealand’s Satellite TV services shifted from the old Optus D2 satellite to the KoreaSat6 satellite. This was due to the Optus D2 satellite reaching the end of its operational life. KoreaSat6 will serve as a temporary satellite until 2027, when the new Optus satellite is launched.

What does this mean for me?

For most people around the country watching Freeview and Sky TV, this shift went relatively unnoticed. The changeover happened in the early hours of the morning, and most Sky and Freeview boxes were able to shift seamlessly between satellites. However, for some users, the switch over has not been so seamless, and if you’re reading this blog, you’re likely in this group.

Many motorhome, caravan and boat owners have experienced difficulties. Some satellite dishes or receivers require software updates or an overall upgrade to a new receiver. One particular brand of satellite dish that a few users have struggled to update is the KiwiSat dishes made by Apollo. Thankfully, there are some simple solutions to help get you back to watching your favourite shows.

How to update my satellite or receiver?

If you are experiencing issues like those listed above, then you likely require an update of some sort. Whether that is an update for your satellite dish or for your receiver. If you are using a KiwiSat dish, they have an informative video on their YouTube channel. This goes through the step-by-step process of installing an update onto your KiwiSat dish.

This video is a great guide and should be able to help you get your TV back on track. However, if after watching you are a little confused or require some assistance Geeks on Wheels can help! We have noticed that downloading the required software can be more difficult depending on the user’s device. You will also need to ensure you have the required equipment.

Tips to help with the satellite updates

Want to install the updates yourself? If you have a KiwiSat Satellite, make sure you have a suitable laptop computer and a printer cable (USB-A to USB-B). Head to the Apollo Website and download their KiwiSat and SR-Mecatronic Satellite Antenna Software Updates. Then follow their instructional video step by step.

If the software download doesn’t go successfully, you may need to update some security settings on your device, including core isolation and memory integrity.

If you have a Sky receiver and haven’t been able to watch Sky since the satellite switch, you might also need to update. Users of NZSAT devices shouldn’t need to install software updates but may need to update the channel list on their decoders. They have some straightforward instructions listed on their website too.

Want a simpler solution?

If all of that seems a bit much, Geeks on Wheels has two great options to help get you back on track. Our Satellite switch service can be completed onsite by one of our expert technicians or remotely over the phone via remote access (provided you have the required equipment onsite). We’ve even slashed the prices offering a special rate of $125 for the onsite service and dropping our standard call-out fee. For the remote service it is a discounted rate of $75 for expert assistance wherever you are (as long as you have reception and internet).

What our members think about Geek+

Don’t take our word for it! Check out what some of our current Geek+ members have been saying about our ultimate IT support package!

I’m a registered user of the Geek Helpline, which is a godsend. Jim fixed not only a new problem—losing access to Word and Firefox, both of which happened unexpectedly and at the most inconvenient time—but also a longstanding printing issue that at least three others had tried in vain to fix. The Helpline is easy to use and cost-efficient, particularly if you’re lucky enough to have someone like Jim at the other end of the phone.

All the staff I have dealt with at Geeks on Wheels, be it Vaughan or whoever, have been a pleasure to deal with and it’s so great to have a company who most obviously puts their clients first with outstanding service—the yearly subscription has already paid for itself a hundred times over already. Thanks, team!

Maria at MicroMed (Geek Plus Business Member)

I have only praise for the Geek team. After initial difficulties with a new printer and a failing newish PC, all problems were eventually resolved in minimal time to my total satisfaction. The value of my Geek Plus Premium membership was demonstrated fully, and I can only recommend it strongly to everyone else.

Anonymous (Geek Plus Individual Premium Member)

Amazingly, I found my way around the website to pay my Geeks Plus subscription, which I have used several times in the past year—sometimes for small issues with an easy answer that I had no idea how to remedy. These guys and gals are angels!
