Hi Geeks! This month we\u2019re focusing on smart devices. These clever devices can make life much easier, but many people struggle to get them set up in the first place. In this piece, we\u2019re offering a quick guide on getting them set up and under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many devices can work with Google Home<\/a> \u2013 simply look for the \u2018Works with Google Home\u2019 sticker when shopping to ensure their compatibility. This way, you can connect anything from your lighting and entertainment units (such as TV and radio), to your home security and appliances (such as a fridge). This network can be as simple or as complex as you like. The first step is to get it all set up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 1: Setting up your smart devices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you haven\u2019t already done so, follow the steps provided by the device maker to set up your smart home devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Step 2: Connecting your smart home devices in the Google Home app <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

  1. The first step is always to check the manufacturer’s instructions on your new device. This will ensure you\u2019re aware of any special guidance or steps you\u2019ll need to know for that specific product or model.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Next, download and open the Google Home app<\/strong> with your smartphone or tablet. It is available for Android here<\/a>, and on iTunes here<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Once the app is downloaded, open it and tap the \u2018Add +\u2019<\/strong> button. Then hit \u2018Set up device +\u2019<\/strong> and select \u2018Works with Google\u2019<\/strong>, and select the device from the list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. The app will then prompt you for the specific device, so you\u2019ll simply need to follow the steps on the screen.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    You can complete these steps for as many smart devices as you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Step 3: Controlling and managing your smart devices <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Learning how to control and manage your devices effectively can make life even easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Creating rooms<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One of those management options is to create \u2018rooms\u2019. This means you can assign a device, or a number of devices, to a specific room in your home to make it easier to manage. For example, this would be useful to easily manage the smart light bulbs in your living room specifically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To do this, enter the app, and touch and hold the chosen device\u2019s tile. Then hit \u2018Settings\u2019, \u2018Room\u2019, and either \u2018Add a custom room\u2019 to create a new room or \u2018Choose a room\u2019. Note that you cannot add a device to more than one room at a time. However, you can change a device\u2019s room, rename rooms, and delete rooms all within the app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2. Rename your devices<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Another feature you can use is the option to rename your smart devices. This might be helpful if your devices have technical or doubled up names that make them hard to tell apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    To change a device\u2019s name, touch and hold the device\u2019s tile then hit \u2018Settings\u2019 and \u2018Name\u2019 to enter the new name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
