So, what does this mean? The main impact is that Microsoft will no longer be providing updates or support for the operating system. As well as this, users may be vulnerable to security risks and compatibility issues with new software and hardware. But, don’t worry! Today we’ll go over a couple of options for upgrading from Windows 8.1 during the end-of-life period.

Unsure what to do if you’re still using Windows 8.1? Upgrading to Windows 10, or purchasing a new device are the two easiest options. If you decide to purchase a new device it might be worthwhile considering other operating systems.

Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, and the best choice depends on your needs and budget. Overall, It’s definitely important to take steps to upgrade to ensure you and your device are protected.

Upgrading to a newer version of Windows

Upgrading to a newer version of Windows is the most straightforward option for transitioning from Windows 8.1.

If your device meets the system requirements for Windows 10, you can download the upgrade for free through the Microsoft website.

Upgrading to Windows 10 will allow you to continue using your existing device and keep your files and settings. But, it may not be the most effective option if your device is older! Windows 10 requires more space and computing power from your device. This means you may notice a significant slowing down of your machine.

Installing a new SSD might help your older device handle the update better. It is important to bear in mind that support for Windows 10 will be finishing in 2025, so a new device may eventually be required.

Purchasing a new device

It might be worth considering purchasing a new device. This is the most expensive option for transitioning from Windows 8.1, but it can also be the most convenient.

Unfortunately, the Boxing Day sales are behind us, but our friendly technicians may be able to recommend some suitable devices, with Windows 11 pre-installed!

If you decide to purchase a new device, you’ll be spoilt for choice. With a wide range of options, including laptops, tablets, and desktop computers, there’s bound to be one that works for you! The new device will come with a newer version of Windows pre-installed, and you won’t have to worry about upgrading or installing a new SSD.

Make sure to keep in mind what exactly you’ll be using the device for and what specifications are important to you. You won’t need a super powerful gaming computer if you only plan on checking your emails.

Trying out a new Operating System

Fancy a change from Windows? If you’ve decided to purchase a new device it might be worthwhile switching to a different operating system (OS). The operating system (OS) acts as the “brain” of the computer and allows you to use all its features fully. As well as this, it provides security measures to protect the computer and its data from unauthorised access or attack.

There are a number of alternative operating systems to choose from, including macOS (Apple devices) and Chrome OS (Google devices). Each operating system has its own unique features and benefits. So, the best choice for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences.

Switching to a different operating system can be a good option if you are unhappy with Windows 8.1 or if you want to try something new. However, switching operating systems can also be a complex process that requires technical expertise, and it may not be an option for all users. It is also important to note that switching to a different operating system may require you to purchase new software as well.

If you are considering transitioning from Windows 8.1 during the end-of-life period, Geeks on Wheels can help.
