One of these risks being romance scams!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 2019 and 2020, the <a href=\"https:\/\/netsafe.org.nz\/romance-scams\/\">average loss per romance scam<\/a> victim in New Zealand was a whopping $18,667. And unfortunately, most of this loss would have been unrecoverable. So, in this blog, we\u2019ve compiled a list of tell-tale signs and handy tips to help you avoid becoming a part of this statistic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/1_1-840x529.jpg\" alt=\"Man using technology \" class=\"wp-image-12487\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How do romance scams work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Romance scams involve fraudsters posing as ideal romantic partners and convincing individuals to send them money or personal information. This can happen through email, social media, dating websites and apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin with, scammers will often create fake online profiles with stolen photos and information from the internet. They will have a well-thought-out and extensive backstory to make their profile seem genuine and trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will either hook victims in by reaching out and contacting them through their in-genuine online profiles or by creating fake website ads that advertise made-up dating websites or lure victims to their fake profiles.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After successfully targeting an individual, scammers will then build a relationship with their victim through messaging and phone calls. Eventually, after some time, they will request money or personal information for various reasons such as travel costs, medical expenses, or financial assistance to meet in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end, none of these reasons are real, and victims can lose substantial amounts of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/1_2-840x529.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12488\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to identify romance scams<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Romance scammers spend a lot of time and energy building a very convincing backstory to go with their fake profile and other scam techniques. However, there are a few tell-tale signs that can give away a romance scam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make sure to do a thorough check of a person\u2019s online profile. Check if the photos were all added recently, this is sometimes a sign of a new fake profile.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Search for the person on various social platforms, including, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram. Cross-referencing photos, information, and friend groups.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person you\u2019re talking to is hesitant to meet in person or provide personal information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person makes confessions of love or strong feelings within a short time of speaking to them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They ask for money or personal information early into the relationship<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The person makes unrealistic and unbelievable claims<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They avoid answering personal and specific questions and their answers don\u2019t match their profile information or previous conversations you\u2019ve had.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If several scammers are alternating to maintain the online relationship you might notice a change in the person\u2019s writing style.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it is common for romance scammers to move quickly in an online relationship, many scammers can be incredibly persistent and don\u2019t mind playing the waiting game. Deepfakes and voice cloning make it harder than ever to tell what\u2019s real and what\u2019s not, putting online daters at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are video calling someone you\u2019ve never met, look out for the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discontinuity across clips (clothing colour changes).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unnatural body posture or facial movements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Out of sync audio between voice and mouth<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Blurred mouth or chin area<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive pixelation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are receiving selfies from someone you\u2019ve never met, look out for the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Glossy, artificial or \u201ctoo perfect\u201d looking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extra or misplaced arms and limbs\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distorted imagery in background\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Garbled text and\/or numbers\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are voice calling someone you\u2019ve never met, look out for the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>No background noise or unnatural background noise<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Robotic or \u201cflat\u201d tone that sounds too perfect!\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/1_3-840x529.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12489\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to manage a romance scam<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you suspect you may be the victim of a romance scam, there are a few steps you can take to manage your situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First and foremost, stop all communication with the potential scammer and cease sending them money or personal information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve given the scammer information such as your personal account log-ins, change your passwords. If you\u2019ve given them your credit card information, call your bank provider and cancel your card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can report romance scams using either of the following cyber safety organisations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cert.govt.nz\/individuals\/report-an-issue\/#:~:text=If%20you%20or%20someone%20else,being%20committed%2C%20call%20111%20now.\">CERT NZ<\/a> &#8211; Computer Emergency Response Team New Zealand<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/netsafe.org.nz\/reportanincident\/?gclid=CjwKCAiAleOeBhBdEiwAfgmXf2gsOVuozgDcvXQa_sXK-50lA6GwJAZ6FOqJ_9T8ztlwJK_8c4VIBBoC-FMQAvD_BwE\">Netsafe<\/a> &#8211; New Zealand&#8217;s independent, non-profit online safety organisation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Should you lose money through a romance scam, you can reach out to NZ Police at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.police.govt.nz\/use-105\">105.police.govt.nz<\/a> for assistance. Although the police will do their best to help, the reality is that your funds will probably not be recovered.
