Just saying the word is enough to make some people sigh deeply and stare into the distance. Do you find yourself asking, &#8220;Why does my printer say it&#8217;s offline? Why does nothing happen when I click print? Why are my prints faded and streaky? How do I fix my paper jam?&#8221; One minute they\u2019re behaving, the next they\u2019re flashing mysterious lights, claiming they\u2019re \u201coffline\u201d, or simply refusing to acknowledge that you click print at all. No one likes silly printer problems!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If that sounds familiar, you\u2019re not alone. Printers are easily one of the most common tech troubles we see, and the good news is that many of the most annoying issues have surprisingly simple fixes. So before you threaten to do some not-so-nice things to your printer, let\u2019s walk through the most common printer problems and what you can try at home first!<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cMy printer says it\u2019s offline\u201d (but it\u2019s clearly turned on)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"882\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19672\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems.png 882w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the number one printer complaint we hear, and it usually comes down to one thing: your printer and your computer are no longer talking to each other. This can happen after a power cut, a Wi-Fi change, or if the printer has been sitting unused for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with the basics:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Check that the printer is turned on and has a light or screen showing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Look at your Wi-Fi router and make sure it\u2019s turned on with the correct lights showing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Turn the printer off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Turn your computer or laptop off, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Once everything is back on, give it a minute to reconnect and then try printing again. You\u2019d be amazed at how often this alone fixes the problem. If it doesn\u2019t, the printer may need to be reconnected to the Wi-Fi. If that still doesn\u2019t work, it might be time to call in a <a href=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/contact-geeks-on-wheels\/\">tech<\/a> to save your sanity!<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USB Cable or Ethernet Cable?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"882\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-2.png\" alt=\"USB &amp; Ethernet Cables\" class=\"wp-image-19673\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-2.png 882w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-2-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-2-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You can connect printers in a few different ways, and this is where things often get confusing. Some printers can have some pretty vague instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A USB cable connects the printer directly to one computer. One end plugs into your computer (flat and rectangular), and the other end plugs into the printer (usually more square-shaped). This setup is common when the printer sits right next to the computer, and only one person uses it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An Ethernet cable connects the printer to your modem or router, so multiple devices can print to it. Both ends look the same and clip in firmly, similar to a phone plug but wider.<br><br>A quick way to tell what you\u2019re using:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">If the cable runs from the printer to the computer, it\u2019s a USB Cable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">If the cable runs from the printer to the internet box on the wall or shelf, it\u2019s an Ethernet cable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">If no cable is plugged in at all, the printer is likely using or trying to use Wi-Fi<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If your printer suddenly goes offline, checking where the cable goes and making sure it\u2019s pushed in properly is an excellent first step!<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I click Print, and absolutely nothing happens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"882\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-3.png\" alt=\"Paused Printer\" class=\"wp-image-19674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-3.png 882w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-3-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-3-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Few things are more confusing than a printer that fails silently. No error message, no warning, just nothing. Just stuck with one of the more confusing printer problems. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, check the basics (power, paper, cables), then restart both the printer and the computer. If that doesn\u2019t help, the printer may be paused or set to offline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Windows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Click Start<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Open Settings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Go to Bluetooth &amp; devices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Select Printers &amp; scanners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Choose your printer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Click Open print queue<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Click the Printer menu at the top<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Make sure \u201cUse Printer Offline\u201d is unchecked<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Make sure \u201cPause printing\u201d is unchecked<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>On macOS:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Open System Settings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Click Printers &amp; Scanners<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Select your printer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Look at the button near the top right of the window<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">If you see a play icon, click it to resume printing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">If jobs are stuck, open the printer queue and resume or cancel them<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Faded, streaky, or missing colours<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"882\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-4.png\" alt=\"Printer Colour Test\" class=\"wp-image-19675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-4.png 882w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-4-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-4-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If your pages look washed out, patchy, or have lines running through them, the problem is usually ink or toner-related, but that doesn\u2019t always mean you need to replace anything straight away! This is one of the most common printer problems we see!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try this first:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Check the printer for any ink or toner warnings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Remove the ink cartridges gently and place them back in firmly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Look for a clean or maintenance option on the printer screen or computer <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Print a test page after cleaning<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Power Flush (also called Deep Clean)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If a normal clean doesn\u2019t help, many printers have a more thorough option called a Power Flush or <a href=\"https:\/\/id.canon\/id\/support\/8200188000\">Deep Clean<\/a>. This forces ink through the print head at higher pressure to clear blockages, dried ink, or air bubbles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially useful if the printer hasn\u2019t been used for a while. It does use more ink, so it\u2019s best saved for when prints are clearly missing colours or heavily streaked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The steps vary slightly by brand, but usually look like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Open Bluetooth &amp; Scanners on your computer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Select your printer<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Click Printing Preferences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Open Maintenance or Tools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Choose Cleaning or Print Head Cleaning<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Select Deep Clean, Power Clean, or Power Flush<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Click Start or OK<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Let the process finish completely! It can take several minutes and may sound louder than usual, which is completely normal! When it\u2019s done, print a test page. If there\u2019s no improvement after one or two attempts, it\u2019s probably time to get professional help!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to clear a paper jam?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"882\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-5.png\" alt=\"Paper Jammed in Printer\" class=\"wp-image-19676\" srcset=\"https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-5.png 882w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-5-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/geeksonwheels.co.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/Printer-Problems-5-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 882px) 100vw, 882px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Paper jams are frustrating, especially when you can\u2019t actually see any paper stuck inside. Even a tiny scrap can trigger an error. This is definitely one of the more annoying printer problems to come across. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s the safest way to deal with it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Turn the printer off<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Open all lids and trays carefully<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Look closely for small torn pieces of paper<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Remove paper gently and never pull hard<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Reload paper neatly and not too tightly<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If nothing is visible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Check for a rear door or panel and open it carefully<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Remove the paper tray completely<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Inspect the empty slot using a good light or torch<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Look around the rubber rollers and gently turn them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"has-small-font-size\">Close all trays and covers firmly before turning the printer back on.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If the jam message won\u2019t clear, stop there. Forcing things can damage sensors or rollers, and at that point, a technician can save you from making a small problem much bigger!<br><br><em>Printers may never be anyone\u2019s favourite piece of technology, but a calm restart, a cable check, or a quick clean can solve a huge number of problems.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And when it doesn\u2019t, that\u2019s exactly what technicians are for.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If nothing else, remember the golden rule of printer troubleshooting: when in doubt, restart everything first.
